HONEY
There emerges from their (the bees')
stomachs a drink of various hues. In it is a cure for mankind.
Qur'aan, Surah Nahl
In the above aayat (verse), the Qur'aan mentions the curing
property of honey. It is a great cure for sickness. Although
Muslims recite this verse, know its meaning, very few really
accept it for practical adoption. The Yaqeen is weak, hence
Muslims do not derive assurance from the Divine Prescriptions.
Yet, Allah Ta'ala is the creator of both illness and remedy. When
the Qur'aan declares that in honey there is a cure for the
ailments of people, there is no reason why Muslims should not
believe in the curing ability of this substance. If honey is used
with Yaqeen and regularly, many ailments will be cured. However,
on account of weakness of Imaan, Muslims are not inclined to
adopt this Qur'aanic perscription.
Although it pains us to cite the results of the studies embarked
on by western experts, we nevertheless, shall do so for the
benefit of those Muslims who are weak in Imaan. Perchance they
will understand the Wisdom of the Qur'aan and renew their Yaqeen
in the advice of the Qur'aan. Hereunder we reproduce a report
which appeared in the E.P.Herald.
Honey Remedy for Diverse Range of Woes
Herald Correspondent London - honey is being rehabilitated
as an internal and external medicament according to an article in
the July issue of the journal of the Royal Society of Medicine.
The author, Dr A Zumia, considers that it is time for
conventional medicine to give this ancient remedy full
recognition.
Honey is now being used as an effective application to wounds,
burns and ulcers. It has recently been shown to reduce the need
for skin grafts, and even amputations, when applied to severe
wounds, promoting healing when conventional treatments have
failed. It is suggested that honey may possess antileprosy
properties.
Reports of its effectiveness in treating severe bowel diseases
such as salmonella food poisoning , and even cholera, have been
published in recent years. It has been found to be superior to
powerful antibiotics in suppressing the growth of
disease-producing organisms in urinary tract infections.
Honey contains enzymes which, along with its antibiotic
properties, enables it to absorb water from swollen tissues,
clean wounds and protect from further infection.
Honey can be used in the place of glucose in re-hydrating
solutions, in case of dehydration due to diarrhoea. A clinical
study involving 169 babies and young children suffering from
gastro-enteritis demonstrated that its use in this way shortened
the duration of bacterial diarrhoea.

THE BRUSH & THE MISWAAK
Hadhrat Aishah radhiyallahu anha,
reporting a Hadeeth of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam
said:
The constant use of miswaak is a
cure for all illness excepting death.
While the Shariah stresses the use of the
Miswaak, modernists deem it appropriate to ridicule this
important practice of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam. A
variety of silly arguments are presented against the Miswaak. One
such argument of the modernists is that in our times there exists
a better substitute, viz., the toothbrush which was not found in
the early days. They, therefore, advocate the use of the brush
instead of the Miswaak. Let them now hear what modernist kuffar
experts have to say on the subject of toothbrushes. Hereunder we
reproduce verbatim a report which appeared in the Eastern
Province Herald:
"London - toothbrushes are bad for your health and can spread
infection ranging from herpes to sore throats and pneumonia.
A study just published after a decade of research has found that
those little nylon bristles harbour bacteria and fungi which
reproduce themselves and are virtually impossible to kill.
The longer the toothbrush is used, the worse the germs become.
Researchers have now warned that instead of
keeping them two or three months,
they should be replaced every two weeks.
Dr.Richard Glass, professor of Oral Pathology at the University
of Oklahoma's college of dentistry and medicine, makes the
recommendation after tests including experiments on dogs.
For a month the dogs had their teeth cleaned with either a
sterilized toothbrush, with one infected with an organism or
repeatedly with the same brush.
The results were the same every time. The dogs who had their
teeth cleaned with the same brush succumbed to all numbers of
infections.
The problem, Dr. Glass said, is caused by the brush creating
lesions in the mouth and spreading the infection into the blood
stream.
Researchers then attempted to find a way of killing the bacteria.
They tried disinfecting, microwaving, oven borbon and scotch -
but nothing available to the average householder worked."
Rasulullah (sallallahu alyhi wasallam) said: "Make incumbent on
you the use of the miswaak, for verily, it is pleasant for the
mouth and a pleasure for Allah."

Positive Medicinal Value of the Miswaak Established by Medical
Science
After a two-year study, Dr Ezekiel Sofowora, acting Dean of
Pharmacy at Ife University in Nigeria, says that the roots and
stems used for tooth-cleaning not only have anti-microbe
qualities, but could help combat sickle cell anaemia.
Pitting a chewing -stick compound, fagara xantho-oxyloides,
against sickled and normal blood cells, Sofowora found that it
prevented a blood cell going sickle...'and if it has sickled, the
compound brings the cell back into shape'. In addition, evidence
from five generations of use of the chewing-stick indicate that
the compound has 'none of the severe side-effects experienced in
currently-used compounds of urea and cynates'.
