Trials

The Noble Qur'an Al-'Ankaboot 29:2-3

Do people think that they will be left alone because they say: "We believe," and will not be tested.

And We indeed tested those who were before them. And Allâh will certainly make (it) known (the truth of) those who are true, and will certainly make (it) known (the falsehood of) those who are liars, (although Allâh knows all that before putting them to test).

Hadith - Al-Tirmidhi 1562, Narrated Sa'd
When the Prophet (peace be upon him) was asked which people suffered the greatest affliction, he replied, "The prophets, then those who come next to them, then those who come next to them. A man is afflicted in keeping his religion. If he is firm in his religion his trial is severe, but if there is weakness in his religion it is made light for him, and it continues like that till he walks on the earth having no sin."

[Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah and Darimi transmitted it, and Tirmidhi said this is a hasan sahih tradition]

 Surah Al-Mu'minun(23) Ayah 101-103

Then, when the Trumpet is blown, there will be no kinship among them that Day, nor will they ask of one another.

Then, those whose scales (of good deeds) are heavy, - these, they are the successful.

And those whose scales (of good deeds) are light, they are those who lose their ownselves, in Hell will they abide.

In The Name Of Allah The Most Gracious The Most Merciful

Surah Al-Mu'minun(23) Ayah 88-89

Say "In Whose Hand is the sovereignty of everything (i.e. treasures of each and everything)? And He protects (all), while against Whom there is no protector, (i.e. if Allah saves anyone none can punish or harm him, and if Allah punishes or harms anyone none can save him), if you know."

They will say: "(All that belongs) to Allah." Say: "How then are you deceived and turn away from the truth?"

Surah al-Qadr (The Power)
Chapter 97: Verses 1-5

"Verily, We have sent it (Quran) down in the Night of Al-Qadr (Power).
And What will make you know what the Night of Al-Qadr is?
The Night of Al-Qadr is better than a thousand months.
Therein descend the angels and the Spirit (Ruh) by their Lord's permission with every matter.
In it there is peace until the appearance of dawn.
"

Commentary:

The theme of this chapter of the Quran is to acquaint us with the importance of the Quran and the role of the Night of Al-Qadr, which falls in the last ten nights of Ramadan, plays in connecting us with Allah. Al-Qadr could be translated in several ways, all of which are interrelated in meaning: Power, Decree, Glory, Destiny, etc.

Allah begins by stating that He has sent the Quran down during the Night of Al-Qadr, and it is a blessed night. The fact that this chapter is placed, in the arrangement of the Quran, right after the chapter "Al-'Alaq", the first five verses of which began the process of revelation to the Prophet Muhammad in the cave Hira, explains that this book was sent down in a destiny-making night that changed the future of humanity!

The Night of Decree has two implications: First, it is the night during which the destinies of people and the Allah's creation are decided. It is also the night when the times of death and provisions are measured out, as Allah says about this night in another chapter: "Therein is decreed every matter of decree." [44:4] In other words, it is not an ordinary night, but a night in which new decisions are being made and the relationships of the believers with Allah strengthened and refreshed.

No wonder, Allah then emphasizes its importance in the following manner, "The Night of Al-Qadr is better than a thousand months." And as the Prophet (peace be upon him) once said, "...Whoever is deprived of its good, then he has truly been deprived!" [Ahmed and An-Nasaai]. Not only that, this night can surely change our life forever, as the Prophet (pbuh) further says, "Whoever stands (in prayer) during the Night of Al-Qadr with faith and expecting reward (from Allah), he will be forgiven for his previous sins." [Muslim]

Second, the revelation of this Book and its revolutionary message is not merely the revelation of a book, only to be used for academic study or recited on certain occasions, but this revelation is an event that will change the destiny of not only the Arabia, but of the entire world!

Allah concludes by outlining some signs of this Night: when the angels, peace, and blessings descend on earth, surrounding the believers. In fact, as Mujahid (Rahimahullah) said,  "[On this Night] Peace is concerning every matter. It is peace and security because Shaytan will not be able to do any evil or any harm on this night."

[compiled from "Tafsir Ibn Kathir", by Ibn Kathir (Rahimahullah) and "Towards Understanding the Quran" by Syed Abul Ala Mawdudi]

 Surah An-Nisa(4) Ayah 100

He who emigrates (from his home) in the Cause of Allah, will find on earth many dwelling places and plenty to live by. And whosoever leaves his home as an emigrant unto Allah and His Messenger, and death overtakes him, his reward is then surely incumbent upon Allah. And Allah is Ever OftForgiving, Most Merciful.

 Surah Al-Hijr(15) Ayah 98-99

So glorify the praises of your Lord and be of those who prostrate themselves (to Him).

And worship your Lord until there comes unto you the certainty (i.e. death).

The Urgency to have a Will

The Noble Qur'an - Al-Baqarah 2:180-182

It is prescribed for you, when death approaches any of you, if he leaves wealth, that he make a bequest to parents and next of kin, according to reasonable manners. (This is) a duty upon Al-Muttaqûn (the pious - see V.2:2).

Then whoever changes the bequest after hearing it, the sin shall be on those who make the change. Truly, Allâh is All-Hearer, All-Knower.

But he who fears from a testator some unjust act or wrong-doing, and thereupon he makes peace between the parties concerned, there shall be no sin on him. Certainly, Allâh is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Hadith - Bukhari, Volume 4, Book 51, Number 1

Narrated Abdullah bin Umar: Allah's Apostle said, "It is not permissible for any Muslim who has something to will to stay for two nights without having his last will and testament written and kept ready with him."

  • Do not attend the funeral of a hypocrite or disbeliever

Say: "If any men go astray (Allah) Most Gracious extends (the rope) to them. Until when they see the warning of Allah (being fulfilled) either in punishment or in (the approach of) the Hour they will at length realize who is worst in position and (who) weakest in forces!

"And Allah doth advance in guidance those who seek guidance; and the things that endure. Good Deeds are best in the sight of thy Lord as rewards and best in respect of (their) eventual returns." QURAN 19/75,76

Hadith Qudsi .

I am as My servant thinks I am. I am with him when he makes mention of Me. If he makes mention of Me to himself, I make mention of him to Myself; and if he makes mention of Me in an assembly, I make mention of him in an assemble better than it. And if he draws near to Me an arm's length, I draw near to him a fathom's length. And if he comes to Me walking, I go to him at speed.

When my servants ask thee concerning Me I am indeed close (to them); I listen to the prayer of every suppliant when he calleth on Me; let them also with a will listen to My call and believe in Me; that they may walk in the right way. QURAN2/186

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 8.627 Narrated byAisha

The Prophet said, "O followers of Muhammad! By Allah, if you knew what I know, you would weep much and laugh little."
