Kinship With the Detached
Those who maintain kinship with the detached, who continue to
provide for those who let them down and willingly forgive
their oppressors, shall indeed excel both in this world and
the next.
-The Prophet Muhammad, as reported by 'Uqbah bin Amir |
|
Seat
of Secrets
When your heart becomes a seat of secrets, you will come to
your destination. Hide your innermost thoughts, said the
Prophet, and you will attain your object of desire. Seeds are
buried in the earth, but their innermost secrets bloom as an
exquisite garden.
-Rumi, "Mathnawi" |
|
My
Hope, My Rest, My Delight
O Beloved of hearts, I beseech only You.
Have pity this day
on those who turn to You.
My Hope, my Rest,
my Delight,
this heart can love
none other but You.
-Rabi'a, "Rabia the Mystic" |
|
Praise Be to Allah
The words, "Praise be to Allah," are the easiest to recite,
yet heaviest in balance and dearest to the Merciful.
-The Prophet Muhammad, as reported by Abu Hurairah |
|
Your
Benevolent Mercy
Then Moses said, "Lord! Have mercy upon me and my brother;
grant us Your benevolent mercy, for You are the Most
Compassionate of all those who show mercy."
-Qur'an, Al-A'raf, Surah 7:151 |
|
Render Thanks to Allah
O you who believe! Partake of the good things that We have
provided for you, and render thanks to Allah if it is He whom
you worship.
-Qur'an, Al-Baqara, Surah 2:172 |
|
His
Miracles are Countless
His miracles are countless,
the waves of His
bounty tide upon tide.
These and a hundred
times as many miracles
allow the light of
His face
to shine inside and
out.
-Rumi, "Mathnawi" |
|
The
Arrogant and the Boastful
No disaster, unless it has been preordained and recorded in
the book of records, can ever befall the earth nor your own
selves. Behold, all this is easy enough for Allah. Know this
so that you may not despair for the good fortune you lost,
nor exult unduly because of the blessings bestowed upon you.
Allah does not love the arrogant and the boastful.
-Qur'an, Al-Hadid, 57:22-23 |
|
Comprehend and Interpret Visions
You shall be the chosen of your Lord; He will enlighten you
to comprehend and interpret visions and will bestow His grace
upon you and upon the house of Jacob, as He perfected His
blessings upon your forefathers, Abraham and Isaac. Your Lord
indeed is the Discerning, All-Aware.
-Qur'an, Yusuf, Surah 12:6 |
|
The
Path of the Virtuous
Say, "Behold, my Lord has guided me onto a straight path, the
path of the virtuous Abraham who turned away from all that
was false. All my prayers and my devotion, my life and my
death are for Allah, the Lord of the worlds, He who has no
peer. Thus I am commanded, becoming the first among those
that surrender themselves to Him."
-Qur'an, Al-An'am, Surah 6:162-64 |
|
Power Over All
Things
If
Allah afflicts you with hardship, there is none that can remove it save Him,
and if He blesses you with good fortune, no one can reduce it. He has power
over all things.
-Qur'an,
Al-An'am, Surah 6:17
|
|
A
King Within Himself
The wisdom of this world brings doubt. The wisdom of religion
soars above the skies. Reflection on Truth opens the way to
the kingdom. Treasures and armies do not make a king. A true
king is a king within himself.
-Rumi, "Mathnawi" |
|
To
His Own Detriment
Say, "Humankind! The Truth has come to you from your Lord. He
that follows it for the good of his own soul, and whosoever
goes astray does so to his own detriment. I am not a warder
over you."
-Qur'an, Yunus, Surah 10:108 |
|
The
Best Among You
The best among you are those who learn the Qur'an and teach
it to others.
-The Prophet Muhammad, as reported by Uthman bin Affan |
|
Attempt the Ascent
Did We not endow them with two eyes, a tongue, and two lips,
and show them the two ways (of good and evil)? Still they did
not attempt the ascent. If only they understood what the
ascent is. It is to free a captive, to feed an orphan or a
near of kin or some miserable wretch in the days of famine,
and to remain virtuous, urging others toward compassion and
fortitude.
-Qur'an, Al-Balad, Surah 90:8-17 |
|
Elect
Him Alone
Without doubt the impressions of the mind are the strongest
and the speech most articulate in the vigil at night. During
the day, you are engaged by the activities of life. So
remember the name of your Lord, and devote yourself to Him
with all your heart. He is the Lord of the East and the West,
and there is no other diety besides Him. Elect Him alone to
protect you, and patiently bear what they say, and avoid
their company without any disagreement.
-Qur'an, Al-Muzzammil, Surah 73:6-10 |
|
Allah
Accepts Repentance
Allah accepts repentance, as long as it is not at the time of
death.
-The Prophet Muhammad, as reported by Ibn Umar |
|
The
best of the people
The best of the people are the first to greet others.
-The Prophet Muhammad, as reported by Abu Umamah |
|
The
Divine Bounty
The divine bounty filled him with peace and strength,
strength that helped him cheerfully endure all the
afflictions that knocked him about.
-Rumi, Mathnawi |
|
The
Sun is Paired With Heat
The object of search is never withheld from the seeker. Thus
the sun is paired with heat and the cloud with water. This
present world is the Creator's prison. You chose to invite
punishment, so suffer punishment! God said, "To whom We
bestowed a particular disposition, We also sent the
appropriate provision."
-Rumi, Mathnawi |
|
Sleep is
an Act of God Being observant of God is an act of devotion toward
God. Sleep is an act of God drawing us near. That which is
conferred upon us by God without our choice is positively
superior to that which we send to Him. Sleep therefore is a
wonderful gift of God bestowed upon His creatures.
-Junyayd, "The Kashf al-Mahjub" |
|
Behold the Wicked
Behold the wicked who used to mock the believers, and
gestured at one another in contempt as they passed them by,
and ridiculed them as they returned home, and claimed when
they saw them, "Look at those who have gone astray." Yet they
were never sent as their guardians. So on that day the
righteous will slight the unbelievers as they recline on the
couches looking around (in wonder).
-Qur'an, Al-Mutaffifin, Surah 83:29-35 |
|
Bidden to Listen
All Muslims, pious or not, are bidden to listen to the
recitation of the Qur'an. As God says, "When the Qur'an is
recited, listen to it and be silent so that you might attain
mercy."
-Al-Hujwiri, "The Kashf al-Mahjub" |
|
The
Homes of His Praise
God created the hearts of men to be the homes of His praise,
but they have become the homes of lust; nothing but fear and
a desire for goodness can purify them. When faith establishes
itself within the heart, praise and contentment follow.
-Abu Muhammad bin Khubayq, "The Kashf al-Mahjub" |
|
Have
Patience
Have patience; Allah does not deny the reward of the
righteous.
-Qur'an, Hud, Surah 11:115 |
|
What
a Delightful Company
Those who obey Allah and His messenger shall reside among
those upon whom the Lord bestowed His divine approval. These
are the prophets, the saints, the martyrs, and the righteous.
What a delightful company they shall be.
-Qur'an, An-Nisa, Surah 4:69 |
|
Show
Me a Prayer
His burdens have made him double over, his moans before you
are loud and clear. "Show me a prayer, a benediction," he
cries, "that I may be delivered from these hidden chains."
-Rumi, "Mathnawi" |
|
You
shall be the chosen
You shall be the chosen of your Lord; He will enlighten you
to comprehend and interpret visions and will bestow His grace
upon you and upon the house of Jacob, as He perfected His
blessings upon your forefathers, Abraham and Isaac. Your Lord
indeed is the Discerning, All-Aware.
-Qur'an, Yusuf, Surah 12:6 |
|
Be
not afraid of the night
At midnight I say, "I am near you; be not afraid of the
night, for I am your protecting friend." Last night in your
dream you saw One with a prayer-rug. That was I, and what I
told you in that dream about the meaning of prophecy: make
those words of Mine your mind's guide.
-Rumi, "Mathnawi" |
|
I put
my trust in Allah
"I put my trust
in Allah, My Lord and your Lord! There is not a moving
creature, but He hath grasp of its forelock. Verily, it is my
Lord that is on a straight Path."
-Qur'an,
Hud, Surah 11:56 |
|
Those
who show compassion to the weak
Those who show compassion to the weak, treat parents gently,
and pardon the enslaved shall be granted an easy death and
the delights of Paradise.
-The Prophet Muhammad, as reported by Ja'bir bin Abd'Allah |
