Paradise (Jaanah)

According to Quran and Ahadith

Bismillah ahRahman nirRaheem (In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

Hadith - Sahih Bukhari 4:51, Narrated Abu Huraira

The Prophet said, "A place in Paradise as small as the bow or lash of one of you is better than all the world and whatever is in it"

The Noble Qur'an - Al-Mu'minun 23:8-11

Those who are faithfully true to their trusts and to their covenants; And those who strictly guard their (five compulsory congregational) prayers (at their fixed stated hours).  These are indeed the inheritors.  Who shall inherit the Firdaus (Paradise). They shall dwell therein forever.

Hadith - Sahih Bukhari 4:569, Narrated Abu Huraira

Then Allah [swt] will say (to him): 'I have forbidden Paradise for the disbelievers.'

Hadith - Sahih Bukhari 6:373, Narrated Abu Huraira

The Prophet said, "Paradise and the Fire (Hell) argued, and the Fire (Hell) said, 'I have been given the privilege of receiving the arrogant and the tyrants.' Paradise said, 'What is the matter with me? Why do only the weak and the humble among the people enter me?' On that, Allah said to Paradise, 'You are My Mercy which I bestow on whoever I wish of my servants.' Then Allah said to the (Hell) Fire, 'You are my (means of) punishment by which I punish whoever I wish of my slaves. And each of you will have its fill.' As for the Fire (Hell), it will not be filled till Allah puts His Foot over it whereupon it will say, 'Qati! Qati!' At that time it will be filled, and its different parts will come closer to each other; and Allah will not wrong any of His created beings. As regards Paradise, Allah will create a new creation to fill it with."

Descriptions of Paradise

13. Therein will be thrones raised high,

14. And cups set at hand.

15. And cushions set in rows,

16. And rich carpets (all) spread out.

The First Group to Enter Paradise

Hadith - Sahih Bukhari 4:468, Narrated Abu Huraira

Allah's Apostle said, "The first group (of people) who will enter Paradise will be (glittering) like the moon when it is full. They will not spit or blow their noses or relieve nature. Their utensils will be of gold and their combs of gold and silver; in their centers the aloe wood will be used, and their sweat will smell like musk. Everyone of them will have two wives; the marrow of the bones of the wives' legs will be seen through the flesh out of excessive beauty. They (i.e. the people of Paradise) will neither have differences nor hatred amongst themselves; their hearts will be as if one heart and they will be glorifying Allah in the morning and in the evening."

Hadith - Sahih Bukhari 4:464, Narrated 'Imran bin Husain

The Prophet said, "Verily! 70,000 or 700,000 of my followers will enter Paradise altogether; so that the first and the last amongst them will enter at the same time, and their faces will be glittering like the bright full moon."

Many Paradises

Hadith - Sahih Bukhari 5:318, Narrated Anas

Haritha was martyred on the day (of the battle) of Badr, and he was a young boy then. His mother came to the Prophet and said, "O Allah's Apostle! You know how dear Haritha is to me. If he is in Paradise, I shall remain patient, and hope for reward from Allah, but if it is not so, then you shall see what I do?" He said, "May Allah be merciful to you! Have you lost your senses? Do you think there is only one Paradise? There are many Paradises and your son is in the (most superior) Paradise of Al-Firdaus."

A Ticket to Paradise

Hadith - Sahih Bukhari 2:463, Narrated Anas bin Malik , see also Bukhari 2:340

The Prophet said, "The person who participates in (Holy battles) in Allah's cause and nothing compels him to do so except belief in Allah and His Apostles, will be recompensed by Allah either with a reward, or booty (if he survives) or will be admitted to Paradise (if he is killed in the battle as a martyr). Had I not found it difficult for my followers, then I would not remain behind any sariya going for Jihad and I would have loved to be martyred in Allah's cause and then made alive, and then martyred and then made alive, and then again martyred in His cause."

Hadith - Sahih Bukhari 3:894, Narrated Abu Huraira

Allah's Apostle said, "Allah has ninety-nine names, i.e. one-hundred minus one, and whoever knows them will go to Paradise." (Please see Hadith No. 419 Vol. 8)

Have a sense of shame/shyness

(not being shy from doing good, but shyness from doing wrong)

Hadith - Sahih Bukhari, Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah, Ibn Hibban, and Ahmad

Abu Mus'ud reported that the Prophet of Allah, saaws, said, "Among the well-known wisdom of the prophets is the saying, 'If you have no shame, then do as you please.' "

Hadith - Sahih Bukhari, Muslim, Nasa'i, Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah, and Tabarani

Abu Huraira, r.a., reported that the Prophet, saaws, said, "... Having a sense of shame is one branch of faith."

Hadith - Sahih Bukhari, Muslim and Ibn Majah

'Abd Allah ibn Abi 'Atabah said that he heard Abu Sa'id say, "The Prophet of Allah, upon him be peace, was shyer than a virgin in her shift. Whenever he disliked something, we could see it on his face."

Sahih Bukhari,
Volume 9, Book 87, Number 114:
Narrated Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri(radiallaho unho):

The Prophet(salallaho alaihi wasallam) said, "If anyone of you sees a dream
that he likes, then it is from Allah, and he should thank Allah for it and
narrate it to others; but if he sees something else, i.e., a dream that he
dislikes, then it is from Satan, and he should seek refuge with Allah from its
evil, and he should not mention it to anybody, for it will not harm him."

Hadith Qudsi 14:
On the authority of Abu Harayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) from the
Prophet (PBUH), who said: Allah (glorified and exalted be He) has
supernumerary angels who rove about seeking out gatherings in which Allah's
name is being invoked: they sit with them and fold their wings round each
other, fillin that which is between them and between the lowest heaven. When
[the people in the gathering] depart, [the angels] ascend and rise up to heaven.

He (the Prophet p.b.u.h.) said: Then Allah (mighty and sublime be
He) asks them - [though] He is most knowing about them: From where have you
come? And they say: We have come from some servants of Yours on Earth: they
were glorifying You (Subhana llah), exalting you (Allahu akbar), witnessing
that there is no god but You (La ilaha illa llah), praising You (Al-Hamdulillah),
and asking [favours] of You.

He says: And what do they ask of Me?
They say: They ask of You Your Paradise. He says: And have they seen My
Paradise? They say: No, O Lord. He says: And how would it be were they to
have seen My Paradise! They say: And they ask protection of You. He says:
From what do they ask protection of Me? They say: From Your Hell-fire, O
Lord. He says: And have they seen My Hell-fire?

They say: NO.
He says: And how would it be were they to have seen My Hell-fire: They say: And they ask
for Your forgiveness. He (the Prophet p.b.u.h) said: Then He says: I have
forgiven them and I have bestowed upon them what they have asked for,and I
have granted them sanctuary from that from which they asked protection. He
(the Prophet p.b.u.h) said: They say: O Lord, among then is So-and-so, a
much sinning servant, who was merely passing by and sat down with them. He
(the Prophet p.b.u.h) said: And He says: And to him [too] I have given
forgiveness: he who sits with such people shall not suffer.
It was related by Muslim (also by al-Bukhari, at-Tirmidhi, and an-Nasa'i).

Ahaadeeth about the virtue of sadaqah (charity)

There follow some of the shar’i texts which you could quote in order to encourage giving in charity.

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“O you who believe! Spend of that with which We have provided for you, before a Day comes when there will be no bargaining, nor friendship, nor intercession. And it is the disbelievers who are the Zaalimoon (wrongdoers)”
[al-Baqarah 2:254]

“The likeness of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allaah, is as the likeness of a grain (of corn); it grows seven ears, and each ear has a hundred grains. Allaah gives manifold increase to whom He wills. And Allaah is All-Sufficient for His creatures’ needs, All-Knower.

262. Those who spend their wealth in the Cause of Allaah, and do not follow up their gifts with reminders of their generosity or with injury, their reward is with their Lord. On them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve”

[al-Baqarah 2:261-262]

“O you who believe! Spend of the good things which you have (legally) earned, and of that which We have produced from the earth for you, and do not aim at that which is bad to spend from it, (though) you would not accept it save if you close your eyes and tolerate therein. And know that Allaah is Rich (Free of all needs), and Worthy of all praise”

[al-Baqarah 2:267]

“Believe in Allaah and His Messenger (Muhammad), and spend of that whereof He has made you trustees. And such of you as believe and spend (in Allaah’s way), theirs will be a great reward”

[al-Hadeed 57:7]

It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever gives charity equal to a date from good (halal) earnings – for Allaah does not accept anything but that which is good – Allaah will take it in His right hand and tend it for the one who gave it as any one of you tends his foal, until it becomes like a mountain.”

 Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 1344; Muslim, 1014.

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “There is no day on which the people get up but two angels come down and one of them says, ‘O Allaah, give in compensation to the one who spends (in charity),’ and the other says, ‘O Allaah, destroy the one who withholds.’”

Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 1374; Muslim, 1010.

It was narrated that Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) went out – on Eid al-Fitr or Eid al-Adha – to the prayer place, and when he had finished (the prayer) he preached to the people and enjoined them to give charity. He said, “O people, give in charity!” Then he went over to the women and said, “O women, give in charity for I have seen that you are the majority of the people of Hell.” When he went home, Zaynab the wife of Ibn Mas’ood came seeking permission to see him. It was said, “O Messenger of Allaah, here is Zaynab.” He said, “Which Zaynab?” It was said, “The wife of Ibn Mas’ood.” He said, “Yes, let her in.” So they let her in and she said, “O Prophet of Allaah, today you enjoined charity, and I have some jewellery which I wanted to give in charity, but Ibn Mas’ood claims that he and his child have more right to receive it in charity.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Give it in charity to Ibn Mas’ood, for your husband and your child have the most right that you should give it to them in charity.”

Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 1393; Muslim, 80.

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Allaah said: ‘Spend, O son of Adam, and I shall spend on you.’”

Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 5073; Muslim, 993.

And Allaah is the Source of strength.

The Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu Alaihiva Sallam) said:

When any one of you eats let him eat with his right hand and when he drinks,

let him drink with his right hand

Importance of a Sound Character

Abu Hurayra (Razi Allaho Taala Anho) narrated that

The Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu Alaihiva Sallam) said:

The best amongst the believers in faith are the best among them in character.

Islamic Brotherhood / Sisterhood

Abu Hurayra reports that

The Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu Alaihiva Sallam) said:

A Muslim is a brother (or sister) of another Muslim.

He (or she) must not be wronged, insulted or belittled.

No Cursing, No Taunting

Ibn Masud reports that

The Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu Alaihiva Sallam) said:

The believer is neither a taunter nor a curser not indecent nor an abuser.

Once...Prophet Mohammad (Salu-Alaih-e-Wa'aalehi),said to Ali (r.a) :

Ali ! Do 5 Works Before Sleeping , Daily.

  • Give 4000 Dinar Alms/sacrifice (sadqaa) daily before sleeping.
  • Read whole Qur'aan one time ,daily before sleeping.
  • Pay price of Jannah, daily before sleeping.
  • Make a truce/peace between two fighting men, daily before sleeping.
  • Perform a Hajj,daily before sleeping.

Then Ali (r.a) requested :Ya'RasoolAllah(Salu-Alaih-e-Wa'aalehi)...!It is very hard to do...how can I'll do this ?

Prophet Mohammad (Salu-Alaih-e-Wa'aalehi) replied :

  • Read "Sura-e-Fatiha" 4 times.....Its equal to sacrifice 4000 dinars.
  • Read "Sura-e-Ikhlaas" 3 times....Its equal to read Qur'aan one time .
  • Read "Dorood-e-Ibrahimi" 10 times.....Its equal to pay price of Jannah.
  • Read "Astagfaar" (Astagfaar =Astag firul'lahaa rabbi min kul'li zanmbin w'atubu ilaihe)10 times.....Its equal to make truce/peace between 2 fighting men.
  • Read "4rth Kalima" 4 times.....Its equal to perform Hajj.

`Abdullah bin `Amr bin Al-`As (may Allah be pleased with them) said:
A person asked Allah's Messenger (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)
who amongst Muslims was better. Upon this (the Holy Prophet, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) remarked:
One from whose hand and tongue Muslims are safe.
(Agreed upon)

Lessons Deduced:
________________

1. Forbidding directing harm to people whether with words or with acts.
2. Tongue and hand become serious tools if used in disobedience.
3. Goodness in Islam is measured by how many good deeds one performs.

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: The supplication of every one of you is granted if he does not demand its answer quickly and says: I invoked my Lord but it was not answered.
(Reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

Lessons Deduced:
- A Muslim is recommended to supplicate to his Lord for attaining goodness.
- Allah alone answers the supplications of His servants
- The Hadith refers to the peril of abandoning supplication

On the authority of Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) who reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
It is better for anyone of you to carry a bundle of wood on his back, and sell it than to beg of someone whether he may give or decline.

(Reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

Lessons Deduced:
1. Muslims are strongly urged to adopt manual work to earn a living from their own efforts, even if they may lead a simple profession.
2. Begging is disliked as it dishonors the beggar and embarrasses the one who is begged.
3. Islam holds man's honor in high esteem and prefers earning one's living through work rather than through begging.

Ibn `Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that when Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) was in trouble, he used to say:
There is none worthy of worship but Allah, the Incomparably Great, the Clement. There is no god but Allah, the Lord of the Mighty Throne; There is no god but Allah, the Lord of the heavens, the Lord of the earth, and the Lord of the Honorable Throne.
(Reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

Lessons Deduced:
- The method of relief in time of distress and affliction is to confess Allah's Oneness and to frequently say remembrances and glorifications of Allah.

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that he heard the Messenger of Allah (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saying:

By Allah, I seek forgiveness of Allah and turn to Him in repentance more than seventy times a day.

(Reported by Al-Bukhari)

Lessons Deduced

1. A Muslim should stick to seeking the forgiveness of Allah so that He may remove his distresses and afflictions and unexpectedly provides him with sustenance.

2. The hadith raises the Muslims' interest in seeking forgiveness of Allah for though the Prophet, the most righteous man, was forgiven for all his sins, he used to seek Allah's forgiveness seventy times a day to teach his nation and hold a higher status.

On the authority of `Abdullah bin Mas`ud (may Allah be pleased with him) who said:
Allah's Messenger (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) cursed that who accepts usurious interest, the one who pays it, those who record it, and those who stand witness to it.

(Reported by Muslim)

Lessons Deduced:
- Usury is grievously prohibited, because if the writer of the contract and the witness are cursed, then the giver and taker will be subject to greater condemnation.

Surat-ul-Ikhlas equals one-third of the Qur'an
Bismillah Walhamdulillah Was Salaatu Was Salaam 'ala Rasulillah
As-Salaam Alaikum Wa-Rahmatullahi Wa-Barakatuhu

Narrated by Abu Said Al Khudri (Radhiallaho anho):
A man heard another man reciting Surat-ul-Ikhlas (The Unity): "Say: He is Allah, the One (112)" and he was repeating it. The next morning he came to Allah's Messenger (sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam) and mentioned the whole story to him as if he regarded the recitation of that Sura as insufficient.
On that, Allah's Apostle said, "By Him in Whose Hand my soul is! That (Sura No. 112) equals one-third of the Qur'an."
Sahih Al-Bukhari Vol. 8 : No. 638

Bismillah Walhamdulillah Was Salaatu Was Salaam 'ala Rasulillah
As-Salaam Alaikum Wa-Rahmatullahi Wa-Barakatuhu

Narrated by Ibn Umar (Radhiallaho anho):
I heard 'Umar saying, "Allah's Messenger (sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam) said to me, 'Allah forbids you to swear by your fathers." 'Umar said, "By Allah! Since I heard that from the Prophet, I have not taken such an oath, neither intentionally, nor by reporting the oath of someone else."
Sahih Al-Bukhari Vol. 8 : No. 642

3. Swear falsely
Bismillah Walhamdulillah Was Salaatu Was Salaam 'ala Rasulillah
As-Salaam Alaikum Wa-Rahmatullahi Wa-Barakatuhu

Narrated by Abdullah (Radhiallaho anho):
Allah's Messenger (sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam) said, "Whoever swears falsely in order to grab the property of a Muslim (or of his brother), Allah will be angry with him when he meets Him." Allah then revealed in confirmation of the above statement:  "Verily those who purchase a small gain at the cost of Allah's Covenant and their own  oaths." (3.77) Al-Ash'ath said, "This Verse was revealed regarding me and a companion of mine when we had a dispute about a well."
Sahih Al-Bukhari Vol. 8 : No. 653

It was narrated that al-Rubayyi’ bint Mu’awwidh said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) entered upon me on the day of my wedding and sat on my mattress as you are sitting now, and young girls were beating the daff and singing about their fathers who had been killed at the battle of Badr, until a girl said, “And among us is a Prophet who knows what will happen tomorrow.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Do not say this, but say the other things that you were saying.”

Narrated Abu Hurairah : I heard Allah's Messenger (s.a.w.) saying, "A person utters a word thoughtlessly (i.e., without thinking about its being good or not) and, as a result of this, he will fall down into the fire of Hell deeper than the distance between the east and the west."

Commentary: This Hadith shows the disadvantages which can be caused by the improper use of the tongue. It is, therefore, essential that one think before he speaks.

Witr Prayer

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas (salallaho alaihi wasallam) :

Once I passed the night in the house of Maimuna (his aunt). I slept across the bed while Allah's Apostle (salallaho alaihi wasallam) and his wife slept length-wise. The Prophet slept till midnight or nearly so and woke up rubbing his face and recited ten verses from Surat "Aal-Imran." Allah's Apostle went towards a leather skin and performed ablution in the most perfect way and then stood for the prayer. I did the same and stood beside him. The Prophet put his right hand on my head, twisted my ear and then prayed two Rakat five times and then ended his prayer with Witr. He laid down till the Muadh-dhin came then he stood up and offered two Rakat (Sunna of Fajr prayer) and then went out and offered the Fajr prayer.

Doubt about one's prayer

Narrated by Ata' ibn Yasar(Radhiallaho anho):

Allah's Messenger (sallAllaahu `alaihi wasallam) said : When one of
you is in doubt about his prayer, and does not know how much he has
prayed, three or four rak'ahs, he should pray one (additional) rak'ah
and make two prostrations while sitting before giving the salutation.
If the (additional) rak'ah which he prayed is the fifth one, he will
make it an even number by these two prostrations. If it is the fourth
one, the two prostrations will be a disgrace for the devil.

Braided (Plaited) Hair

Hadith - Muslim, Narrated Umm Salamah

I said: Messenger of Allah, I am a woman who has closely plaited hair on my head; should I undo it for taking a bath, because of sexual intercourse? He (the Prophet ) said: No, it is enough for you to throw three handfuls of water on your head and then pour water over yourself, and you shall be purified.

Hadith - Muslim, Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas

Ibn Abbas saw Abdullah ibn al-Harith observing the prayer and (his hair) was plaited behind his head. He (Abdullah ibn Abbas) stood up and unfolded them. While going back (from the prayer) he met Ibn Abbas and said to him: why is it that you touched my head? He (Ibn Abbas) replied: (The man who observes prayer with plaited hair) is like one who prays with his hands tied behind.

Where are your learned men? I heard the Prophet forbidding such a thing as this (i.e. false hair) and he used to say, 'The Israelis were destroyed when their ladies practiced this habit (of using false hair to lengthen their locks)."

Hadith - Bukhari 7:133, Narrated 'Aisha , see also Bukhari 7:818

An Ansari woman gave her daughter in marriage and the hair of the latter started falling out. The Ansari women came to the Prophet and mentioned that to him and said, "Her (my daughter's) husband suggested that I should let her wear false hair." The Prophet   said, "No, (don't do that) for Allah sends His curses upon such ladies who lengthen their hair artificially."

Hadith - Muslim, Narrated Jabir ibn Adullah

Allah's Apostle reprimanded that a woman should add anything to her head (in the form of artificial hair).

'Ubaidullah pointed (towards his head) to show us and added, "Nafi' said, 'It is when a boy has his head shaved leaving a tuft of hair here and a tuft of hair there." Ubaidullah pointed towards his forehead and the sides of his head. 'Ubaidullah was asked, "Does this apply to both girls and boys?" He said, "I don't know," but Nafi' said, -The boy." 'Ubaidullah added, "I asked Nafi' again, and he said, 'As for leaving hair on the temples and the back part of the boy's head, there is no harm, but Al-Qaza' is to leave a tuft of hair on his forehead unshaved while there is no hair on the rest of his head, and also to leave hair on either side of his head.' "

Incense

According to Quran and Sunnah

Bismillah ahRahman nirRaheem (In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

As Medical Treatment

Hadith - Sahih Bukhari 7.599, Narrated Anas Radiya

that he was asked about the wages of the one who cups others. He said, -Allah's Apostle was cupped by Abd Taiba, to whom he gave two Sa of food and interceded for him with his masters who consequently reduced what they used to charge him daily. Then the Prophet sallallahu alehi wasallam (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, 'The best medicines you may treat yourselves with are cupping and sea incense.' He added, 'You should not torture your children by treating tonsillitis by pressing the tonsils or the palate with the finger, but use incense.' "

Hadith - Sahih Bukhari 7.596, Narrated Um Qais bint Mihsan Radiya 'LLAHU ' ANHA ( 'MAY ALLAH BE PLEASED WITH HER' ) '

I heard the Prophet sallallahu alehi wasallam (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)saying, "Treat with the Indian incense, for it has healing for seven diseases; it is to be sniffed by one having throat trouble, and to be put into one side of the mouth of one suffering from pleurisy." ... [Similar narration in Sahih Bukhari 7.611]

Keeping the Mosques Clean and Scenting Them

Fiqh-us-Sunnah 5.132

Aishah Radiya 'LLAHU
' ANHA ( ' MAY ALLAH BE PLEASED WITH HER ' ) 'said, "Perfume the Ka'bah, because this is a part of purifying it." Ibn Az-Zubair used to perfume the entire interior of the Ka'bah. He used to burn one pound of incense in the Ka'bah daily, but on Friday, he burnt two pounds of incense.

Fiqh-us-Sunnah 2.71

'Aishah reports that the Prophet sallallahu alehi wasallam (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)ordered that mosques be built in residential areas and that they be cleaned and perfumed. This is related by Ahmad, Abu Dawud, at-Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah, and Ibn Hibban with a good chain. Abu Dawud's wording is: "He ordered us to build the mosques in the residential areas, to build them well, and to purify them. 'Abdullah would burn incense when 'Umar would sit on the pulpit."

Anas reports that the Prophet sallallahu alehi wasallam (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "The rewards of my ummah were placed before me, even for removing a speck of dust from the mosque." This is related by Abu Dawud, at-Tirmidhi, and Ibn Khuzaimah who calls it sahih.

Istikharah

According to Quran and Sunnah

Hadith - al-Tirmidhi # 2151. [Classed as saheeh by al-Haakim, 1/699, and al-Dhahabi agreed with him. It was classed as hasan by al-Haafiz ibn Hajar in Fath al-Baari, 11/184]

The happiness of the son of Adam depends on his being content with what Allah has decreed for him, and the misery of the son of Adam results from his failure to pray istikharah, and the misery of the son of Adam results from in his discontent with what Allah has decreed for him.

To make the prayer of Istikharah (say: iss-teh-KHAR-uh), one should pray two non-fard (non-obligatory) rakat (units) of
paryer, even if they are of the regular sunnah prayers or a prayer for entering the mosque, and so on, during any time of the day or night.

One should recite in them whatever one wishes of the Qur'an, after reciting al-Fatihah. Then one should praise Allah and invoke blessings upon the Prophet, peace be upon him.

After this one should supplicate to Allah. Jabir Ibn 'Abdullah has reported the following supplication from the Prophet, peace be upon him, when he related, "The Prophet, peace be upon him, taught us how to make Istikharah in all (our) affairs, just as he taught us various surahs of the Qur'an. He told us, 'If anyone of you considers doing something he should offer a two-rak'at prayer other than the obligatory prayers, and then say (after the prayer),

"Allahumma inni astakhiruka bi'ilmika. wa astaqdiruka bi-qudratika, wa as'aluka min fadlika al-azimfa-innaka taqdiru wala aqdiru, wa ta'lamu wala a ' lamu, wa anta 'allamu-l-ghuyub.

Allahumma, in kunta ta' lamu anna hadhaI-amra khairun lifi dini wa ma'ashi wa aqibati amri (or 'ajili amri wa'ajilihi) f aqdirhu li wa yas-sirhu li thumma barik li fihi, wa in kunta ta'llamu anna hadha-l-amra sharrun lifi dini wa ma'ashi wa-aqibati amri (orfi'ajili amri wa ajilihi) fasrifhu anni was-rifni'anhu.

Wa aqdir li al-khaira haithu kana thumma ardini bihi"

(O Allah ! I ask guidance from Your knowledge, and Power from Your Might and I ask for Your great blessings. You are capable and I am not. You know and I do not and You know the unseen. O Allah! If You know that this thing is good for my din and my subsistence and for my Hereafter - (or say, If it is better for my present and later needs) - then ordain it for me and make it easy for me to obtain, and then bless me in it. If You know that this thing is harmful to me in my din and subsistence and in the Hereafter--(or say, If it is worse for my present and later needs)--then keep it away from me, and keep me away from it. And ordain for me whatever is good for me, and make me satisfied with it)."'

The Prophet, may peace be upon him, added that then the person should mention his need."

There is nothing authentic concerning anything specific that is to be recited in the prayer nor is there any authentic report concerning how many times one should repeat it.

An-Nawawi holds that "after making istikharah, a person must do what he is wholeheartedly inclined to do and feels good about doing and should not insist on doing what he had desired to do before making the istikharah. And if his feelings change, he should leave what he had intended to do, for otherwise he is not leaving the choice to Allah, and would not be honest in seeking aid from Allah's power and knowledge. Sincerity in seeking Allah's choice, means that one should completely abandon what one desired oneself."

Some Hadiths (Traditions) of Islam

The noble conduct and the sayings of the Prophet(s) have been a perpetual source of inspiration and guidance for mankind, in general, and the believers, in particular. The former is known as the Sunnah and the latter as Hadith. They inspire us to purify our faith and to sanctify our conduct. At the same time, they instruct us to live a clean and virtuous life. Following these commednable teachings will bring peace and tranquillity to our lives and simultaneously help us to acquire Allah's blessings and bounties. (M. Kazi)

Hadith are thus the sayings, doings and approvals of the prophet Muhammad (peace be upon Him) as related and recorded meticiously by his companions that lived with him. The following translations are taken from a very nice hadith book called "A Treasury of Hadith" compiled by Dr. Mazhar U. Kazi or from Summarized Sahih Al-Bukhari translated by Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan . All these hadith located throughout this website are from the most authentic sources in Islam.

Grey Hair

Hadith - Abu Dawud, Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-'As

The Apostle of Allah said:
Do not pluck out grey hair. If any believer grows a grey hair in Islam, he will have light on the Day of Resurrection. (This is Sufyan's version). Yahya's version says: Allah will record on his behalf a good deed for it, and will blot out a sin for it.

Hadith - Abu Dawud, Narrated AbuDharr

The Prophet said: The best things with which grey hair are changed are henna and katam.

Hadith - Abu Dawud, Narrated Abdullah ibn Mas'ud

The Prophet of Allah disliked ten things: Yellow colouring, meaning khaluq, dyeing grey hair, trailing the lower garment, wearing a gold signet-ring, a woman decking herself before people who are not within the prohibited degrees, throwing dice, using spells except with the Mu'awwidhatan, wearing amulets, withdrawing the penis before the semen is discharged, in the case of a woman who is wife or not a wife, and having intercourse with a woman who is suckling a child; but he did not declare them to be prohibited.

Combing

Hadith - Bukhari, Narrated 'Aisha , see also Bukhari 7:745

The Prophet used to like to start from the right side on wearing shoes, combing his hair and cleaning or washing himself and on doing anything else.

Hadith - Bukhari 1:294, Narrated 'Aisha , see also Bukhari 1:295, 3:362

While in menses, I used to comb the hair of Allah's Apostle .

Hadith - Abu Dawud, Narrated Abdullah ibn Mughaffal

The Apostle of Allah forbade combing the hair except every second day.

Shaving the Head

Hadith - Bukhari 2:785, Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar

Allah's Apostle said, "O Allah! Be merciful to those who have their head shaved." The people said, "O Allah's Apostle! And (invoke Allah for) those who get their hair cut short." The Prophet said, "
O Allah! Be merciful to those who have their head shaved." The people said, "O Allah's Apostle! And those who get their hair cut short." The Prophet said (the third time), "And to those who get their hair cut short." Nafi' said that the Prophet had said once or twice, "O Allah! Be merciful to those who get their head shaved," and on the fourth time he added, "And to those who have their hair cut short."

Hadith - Bukhari 2:787, Narrated 'Abdullah

The Prophet and some of his companions got their heads shaved and some others got their hair cut short. Narrated Muawiya: I cut short the hair of Allah's Apostle with a long blade.

Hadith - Bukhari 5:504, Narrated Ka'b bin Ujra

We were in the company of Allah's Apostle at Al-Hudaibiya in the state of Ihram and the pagans did not allow us to proceed (to the Ka'ba). I had thick hair and lice started falling on my face. The Prophet passed by me and said, "
Are the lice of your head troubling you?" I replied, "Yes." The sub-narrator added, "Then the following Divine Verse was revealed: 'And if anyone of you is ill or has an ailment in his scalp, (necessitating shaving) must pay a ransom (Fida) of either fasting or feeding the poor, Or offering a sacrifice.' (2.196)"

What is the Muslimah's role in Jihad?

Hadith - Sahih Bukhari, Volume 4, Book 52, Number 43, Narrated 'Aisha
(That she said), "O Allah's Apostle! We consider Jihad as the best deed. Should we not fight in Allah's cause?" He said,
"The best Jihad (for women) is Hajj-mabrur (i.e. Hajj which is done according to the Prophet's tradition and is accepted by Allah)."

Following is an example of a woman given permission to participate in jihad, but note her fatal outcome. Also note that her role was that of accompanying her husband in HIS jihad. So, it's not like she had a jihad task vastly seperate from her husband, as though a woman would be sent to fight a battle of jihad in one part of the country while her husband was tied up in a separate jihad.

Hadith - Sahih Bukhari, Narrated Anas bin Malik
Um Haram said, "Once the Prophet slept in my house near to me and got up smiling. I said, 'What makes you smile?' He replied, 'Some of my followers who (i.e. in a dream) were presented to me sailing on this green sea like kings on thrones.' I said, 'O Allah's Apostle! Invoke Allah to make me one of them.' " So the Prophet invoked Allah for her and went to sleep again. He did the same (i.e. got up and told his dream) and Um Haram repeated her question and he gave the same reply. She said, "Invoke Allah to make me one of them."

He said, "You are among the first batch." Later on it happened that she went out in the company of her husband 'Ubada bin As-Samit who went for Jihad and it was the first time the Muslims undertook a naval expedition led by Mu'awiya. When the expedition came to an end and they were returning to Sham, a riding animal was presented to her to ride, but the animal let her fall and thus she died.

Another example of women in jihad other than the jihad of Hajj......

Hadith - Sahih Muslim, Narrated Anas
On the day (of the battle) of Uhad when (some) people retreated and left the Prophet, I saw 'Aisha bint Abu Bakr and Um Sulaim, with their robes tucked up so that the bangles around their ankles were visible hurrying with their water skins (in another narration it is said, "carrying the water skins on their backs"). Then they would pour the water in the mouths of the people, and return to fill the water skins again and came back again to pour water in the mouths of the people.

These are proofs to show that a woman's role in jihad is different from men, yet much needed, and designed to keep her more distant from the direct line of battle for her safety. A woman's jihad besides Hajj, is to support the men of the community in their jihad. The best way to do that, insha'Allah, like anything, is to ASK how you can be of benefit, not to assume a role and hope that's what's helpful

Another related point. Gender segregation is very important in Islam. But please note, that when necessary, such as times of battle, giving water to the soldiers, and other jobs in our lives that put us near men out of necessity, are part of jihad, insha'Allah, that is, IF we are doing it solely for the sake of Allah, swt, and not just "for the money" and its pleasures, to get recognition of the men, to pass the boredom, to puff the ego, increase our status in the eyes of people, or anything else. All that work you do can be nullified if done for the wrong reason, and Allah alone knows which deeds will actually be accepted on Judgement Day.

It is important that women, including single women, who desire to participate in jihad outside the home, find ways to support the jihad of the males in the community, separating herself from their conversations, let them do the planning, the masjid building, etc., but doing the work needed when she can, insha'Allah. Of course she should start with her husband and children, then father and other mahram men to support in their jihad. If she doesn't know how to cook and the men meet in the masajid for regular meetings, perhaps she and another sister should get together and ask if they'd like meals sometimes, and if so, find a way to do that.

Just like women like men to fix things around the house, there are men who don't know how at the beginning of the marriage and eventually teach themselves out of necessity, to do so. So, not knowing HOW to do something, like cooking for large groups of people, or whatever, doesn't mean we shouldn't learn what is necessary and "get to it", insha'Allah! Just like when a person says shadaha and doesn't know how to do salah, this doesn't give them an excuse not to start learning how.

So, let's start learning how we can do the things that support the brothers on the front line in jihad, if this type of jihad beyond hajj is something, thru dua to Allah, swt, we believe we should be doing, and Allah the Majestic, the Most Great knows the conditions of all persons. OIf you are physically unable, perhaps you are financially able and willing to contribute through sadaqa to jihad efforts.

Jihad starts with spreading the daw'ah to the straying Muslims first, to build up the Muslim communities so we can best be prepared to bring in the new Muslims as they are coming in, and they surely are coming in, masha'Allah. It STARTS with the daw'ah in its many forms, but its "END" or more appropriately, "down the road", comes many tests and trials. Before you commit yourself to such jihad, remember the sister above who fell off the riding animal and died.

Nobody said the path would be easy; wearing niqab alone can become jihad in an oppressive land. This jihad spoken of can involve sacrifices, but most importantly it involves Obeience. Allah, subhana wa tala, says He does not need our sacrifice but desires our obedience. Obedience in the salah, obedience and submission to the husband, obedience in guarding our tongue.

And women can't do this path alone without men, for surely women were created with the need of the leadership and guidance of men on the Sunnah, as they were created with the need for women to support and encouragement to stay on the sirataal mustaqeem.

To the Muslims who have read thus far, may Allah swt bless your sincerity with strength, and your knowledge with the ability to apply that knowledge wisely. Amin.

The order for Jihad

The Noble Qur'an 2:190-193
190. And fight in the Way of Allâh those who fight you, but transgress not the limits. Truly, Allâh likes not the transgressors. [This Verse is the first one that was revealed in connection with Jihâd, but it was supplemented by another (V.9:36)].

191. And kill them wherever you find them, and turn them out from where they have turned you out. And Al-Fitnah is worse than killing. And fight not with them at Al-Masjid-al-Harâm (the sanctuary at Makkah), unless they (first) fight you there. But if they attack you, then kill them. Such is the recompense of the disbelievers.

192. But if they cease, then Allâh is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

193. And fight them until there is no more Fitnah (disbelief and worshipping of others along with Allâh) and (all and every kind of) worship is for Allâh (Alone). But if they cease, let there be no transgression except against Az-Zâliműn (the polytheists, and wrong-doers, etc.)

The Noble Qur'an 9:36
That is the right religion, so wrong not yourselves therein, and fight against the Mushrikűn (polytheists, pagans, idolaters, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allâh) collectively, as they fight against you collectively.

The Noble Qur'an 8:72-74
72. Verily, those who believed, and emigrated and strove hard and fought with their property and their lives in the Cause of Allâh as well as those who gave (them) asylum and help, - these are (all) allies to one another. And as to those who believed but did not emigrate (to you O Muhammad SAW), you owe no duty of protection to them until they emigrate, but if they seek your help in religion, it is your duty to help them except against a people with whom you have a treaty of mutual alliance, and Allâh is the All-Seer of what you do.

73. And those who disbelieve are allies to one another, (and) if you (Muslims of the whole world collectively) do not do so (i.e. become allies, as one united block with one Khalifah - chief Muslim ruler for the whole Muslim world to make victorious Allâh's Religion of Islâmic Monotheism), there will be Fitnah (wars, battles, polytheism, etc.) and oppression on earth, and a great mischief and corruption (appearance of polytheism).

74. And those who believed, and emigrated and strove hard in the Cause of Allâh (Al-Jihâd), as well as those who gave (them) asylum and aid; - these are the believers in truth, for them is forgiveness and Rizqun Karîm (a generous provision i.e. Paradise).

Hadith - Bukhari, Vol. 4, No. 41, Narrated 'Abdullaah bin Mas'uud
I asked Allah's Messenger
, "O Allah's Messenger! What is the best deed?" He replied, "To offer the prayers at their early fixed stated times."  I asked, "What is next in goodness?" He replied, "To be good and dutiful to your parents." I further asked, "What is next in goodness?" He replied, "To participate in Jihad in Allah's Cause." I did not ask Allah's Messenger anymore and if I had asked him more, he would have told me more.

The Noble Qur'an 2:216
Jihâd (holy fighting in Allâh's Cause) is ordained for you (Muslims) though you dislike it, and it may be that you dislike a thing which is good for you and that you like a thing which is bad for you. Allâh knows but you do not know.

Hadith - Al-Tirmidhi #3835, Narrated AbuHurayrah
Allah's Messenger said, "
If anyone meets Allah with no mark of jihad, he will meet Allah with a flaw in him."  [Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah transmitted it]

The Noble Qur'an An-Nisaa' 4:75, 76
75. And what is wrong with you that you fight not in the Cause of Allâh, and for those weak, illtreated and oppressed among men, women, and children, whose cry is: "Our Lord! Rescue us from this town whose people are oppressors; and raise for us from You one who will protect, and raise for us from You one who will help."

76. Those who believe, fight in the Cause of Allâh, and those who disbelieve, fight in the cause of Tâghűt (Satan, etc.). So fight you against the friends of Shaitân (Satan); Ever feeble indeed is the plot of Shaitân (Satan).

The Good Deed and Blessings of Jihad
The Noble Qur'an 9:20
Those who believed (in the Oneness of Allâh - Islâmic Monotheism) and emigrated and strove hard and fought in Allâh's Cause with their wealth and their lives are far higher in degree with Allâh. They are the successful.

Hadith - Sahih Bukhari, Volume 4, Book 52, Number 41, Narrated Abdullah bin Masud
I asked Allah's Apostle, "O Allah's Apostle! What is the best deed?" He replied,
"To offer the prayers at their early stated fixed times." I asked, "What is next in goodness?" He replied, "To be good and dutiful to your parents." I further asked, what is next in goodness?" He replied, "To participate in Jihad in Allah's Cause." I did not ask Allah's Apostle anymore and if I had asked him more, he would have told me more.

The Noble Qur'an As-Saff 61:10-14

10. O You who believe! Shall I guide you to a commerce that will save you from a painful torment.

11. That you believe in Allâh and His Messenger (Muhammad SAW), and that you strive hard and fight in the Cause of Allâh with your wealth and your lives, that will be better for you, if you but know!

12. (If you do so) He will forgive you your sins, and admit you into Gardens under which rivers flow, and pleasant dwelling in Gardens of 'Adn Eternity ['Adn (Edn) Paradise], that is indeed the great success.

13. And also (He will give you) another (blessing) which you love, help from Allâh (against your enemies) and a near victory. And give glad tidings (O Muhammad SAW) to the believers.

14. O you who believe! Be you helpers (in the Cause) of Allâh as said 'Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), to AlHawârîeen (the disciples) : "Who are my helpers (in the Cause) of Allâh?" AlHawârîeen (the disciples) said: "We are Allâh's helpers" (i.e. we will strive in His Cause!). Then a group of the Children of Israel believed and a group disbelieved. So We gave power to those who believed against their enemies, and they became the uppermost.
