Shaking hands
Hadith - Muwatta 55.2
Malik related to me from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir that Umayma
bint Ruqayqa said, "I went to the Messenger of Allah
with the women who took an oath of allegiance with him in
Islam. They said, 'Messenger of Allah! We take a pledge with
you not to associate anything with Allah, not to steal, not to
commit adultery, not to kill our children, nor to produce any
lie that we have devised between our hands and feet, and not to
disobey you in what is known.' The Messenger of Allah
said,
'In what you can do and are able.'
"
Umayma continued, "They said, 'Allah and His Messenger are more
merciful to us than ourselves. Come, let us give our hands to
you, Messenger of Allah!' The Messenger of Allah
said, 'I do not shake hands with women.
My word to a hundred women is like my word to one woman.'
"
Hadith - Abu Dawood, Narrated Al-Bara' ibn Azib
The
Prophet
said: If two Muslims meet, shake hands,
praise Allah, and ask Him for forgiveness, they will be
forgiven.
Sweetening the Mouth of the
Newborn
Hadith - Sahih Muslim, Abu Dawud, and Ibn Majah
Anas
said, "I went to the Prophet of Allah, upon him be peace, with
'Abd Allah ibn Abi Talhah on the day that he was born. The
Prophet was wearing a cloak (outside) seeing to a camel. So he
said to me, 'Do you have any dates with you?' I said, 'Yes' and
handed them to him. He moistened them with his tongue, opened
the child's mouth, and placed the softened dates inside. When
the boy showed that he liked them, the Prophet, upon him be
peace, said, 'This is the love of the Ansar for their dates.'
And then he named the boy 'Abd Allah."
Sitting in a Circle to Join the
Believers
Hadith - Malik's Muwatta Book 53, Number 53.3.4
Yahya related to me from Malik from Ishaq ibn Abdullah ibn Abi
Talha from Abu Murra, the mawla of Aqil ibn Abi Talib from Abu
Waqid al-Laythi that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless
him and grant him peace, was sitting in the mosque with some
people when three people came in. Two came toward the Messenger
of Allah
and
one went away. When the two stopped at the assembly of the
Messenger of Allah,
they gave the greeting. One of them saw a gap in the circle and
sat in it. The other sat down behind the circle. The third
turned away and left. When the Messenger of Allah
finished, he said, "Shall I tell you
about three people? One of them sought shelter with Allah, so
Allah gave him shelter. The other was shy, so Allah was shy to
him. The other turned away, so Allah turned away from him."
Who First?
Hadith - Sahih Bukhari 8.251,
Narrated Abu Hurayrah
Allah's Apostle
said, "The riding one should greet the
walking one, and the walking one should greet the sitting one,
and the small number of persons should greet the large number
of persons."
Hadith - Malik's Muwatta Book 53, Number 53.1.1
Yahya related to me from Malik from Zayd ibn Aslam that the
Messenger of Allah,
said, "The one riding greets the one
walking, and when one of a group of people gives a greeting,
it is enough for all of them."
The
person coming or going, should first offer the salutation
(salaams):
Hadith - Abu Dawood 5189, Narrated Abu Hurayrah
The
Prophet
said: When one of you comes to an
assembly, he should give a salutation and if he feels inclined
to get up, he should give a salutation, for the former is not
more of a duty than the latter.
The
pious muslims is anxious to give salaams first
Hadith - Abu Dawood 5178, Narrated Abu Umamah
The
Prophet
said: Those who are nearest to Allah are
they who are first to give a salutation.
The Miser
Hadith - Bukhari's Book of Manners #1046
Abu
Huraira, r.a., said, "The most miserly of all people is one
who is miserly with greetings. The weakest of all people is a
person who is weak in [making] du'a (supplication
prayer).".
The Pregnant Woman's Property
Hadith - Al-Muwatta 37.4a
Yahya
said that he heard Malik say, "The best of what I have heard
about the testament of a pregnant woman and about what
settlements she is permitted in her property is that the
pregnant woman is like the sick person. When the illness is
light, and one does not fear for the sick person, he does with
his property what he likes. If the illness is such that his
life is feared for, he can only dispose of a third of his
estate."
He
said, "It is the same with a woman who is pregnant. The
beginning of pregnancy is good news and joy. It is not illness
and no fear because Allah the Blessed, the Exalted, said in His
Book, 'We gave her good news of Ishaq and after Ishaq, Yaqub.'
(Sura ll ayat 71). And He said, 'She bore a light burden and
passed by with it, but when she became heavy, they called upon
Allah, their Lord, "If you give us a good-doing son, we will be
among the thankful." '(Sura 7 ayat 189).
"When
a pregnant woman becomes heavy, she is only permitted to
dispose of a third of her estate. The beginning of this
restriction is after six months. Allah, the Blessed, the
Exalted, said in His Book, 'Mothers suckle their children for
two complete years.' And He said, 'his bearing and weaning are
thirty months.' (Sura 2 ayat 233).
"When
six months have passed for the pregnant woman from the day she
conceived, she is only permitted to dispose of a third of her
property."
Yahya
said that he heard Malik say, "A man who is advancing in the
row for battle, can only dispose of a third of his property. He
is in the same position as a pregnant woman or an ill person
who is feared for, as long as he is in that situation."
Why the Baby Cries when Born
Hadith - Sahih Bukhari 4.641, Narrated Sa'id bin Al Musaiyab
Abu
Huraira said, "I heard Allah's Apostle saying, 'There is none
born among the off-spring of Adam, but Satan touches it. A
child therefore, cries loudly at the time of birth because of
the touch of Satan, except Mary and her child." Then Abu
Huraira recited: "And I seek refuge with You for her and for
her offspring from the outcast Satan" (3.36)
Recite Adhan in Baby's Ear
Hadith - Sunan of Abu Dawud #5086, Narrated Abu Rafi'
I
saw the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) uttering the
call to prayer (Adhan) in the ear of al-Hasan ibn Ali when
Fatimah gave birth to him.
Volume 1, Book 1, Number 5:
Narrated Ibn 'Abbas:
Allah's Apostle was the most generous of all the people,
and he used to reach the peak in generosity in the month of
Ramadan when Gabriel met him. Gabriel used to meet him
every night of Ramadan to teach him the Qur'an. Allah's
Apostle was the most generous person, even more generous
than the strong uncontrollable wind (in readiness and haste
to do charitable deeds).
Volume 1, Book 1, Number 6:
Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Abbas:
Abu Sufyan bin Harb informed me that Heraclius had sent a
messenger to him while he had been accompanying a caravan
from Quraish. They were merchants doing business in Sham
(Syria, Palestine, Lebanon and Jordan), at the time when
Allah's Apostle had truce with Abu Sufyan and Quraish
infidels. So Abu Sufyan and his companions went to
Heraclius at Ilya (Jerusalem). Heraclius called them in the
court and he had all the senior Roman dignitaries around
him. He called for his translator who, translating
Heraclius's question said to them, "Who amongst you is
closely related to that man who claims to be a Prophet?"
Abu Sufyan replied, "I am the nearest relative to him
(amongst the group)."
Heraclius said, "Bring him (Abu Sufyan) close to me and
make his companions stand behind him." Abu Sufyan added,
Heraclius told his translator to tell my companions that he
wanted to put some questions to me regarding that man (The
Prophet) and that if I told a lie they (my companions)
should contradict me." Abu Sufyan added, "By Allah! Had I
not been afraid of my companions labeling me a liar, I
would not have spoken the truth about the Prophet. The
first question he asked me about him was:
'What is his family status amongst you?'
I
replied, 'He belongs to a good (noble) family amongst us.'
Heraclius further asked, 'Has anybody amongst you ever
claimed the same (i.e. to be a Prophet) before him?'
I
replied, 'No.'
He
said, 'Was anybody amongst his ancestors a king?'
I
replied, 'No.'
Heraclius asked, 'Do the nobles or the poor follow him?'
I
replied, 'It is the poor who follow him.'
He
said, 'Are his followers increasing decreasing (day by
day)?'
I
replied, 'They are increasing.'
He
then asked, 'Does anybody amongst those who embrace his
religion become displeased and renounce the religion
afterwards?'
I
replied, 'No.'
Heraclius said, 'Have you ever accused him of telling lies
before his claim (to be a Prophet)?'
I
replied, 'No. '
Heraclius said, 'Does he break his promises?'
I
replied, 'No. We are at truce with him but we do not know
what he will do in it.' I could not find opportunity to say
anything against him except that.
Heraclius asked, 'Have you ever had a war with him?'
I
replied, 'Yes.'
Then he said, 'What was the outcome of the battles?'
I
replied, 'Sometimes he was victorious and sometimes we.'
Heraclius said, 'What does he order you to do?'
I
said, 'He tells us to worship Allah and Allah alone and not
to worship anything along with Him, and to renounce all
that our ancestors had said. He orders us to pray, to speak
the truth, to be chaste and to keep good relations with our
Kith and kin.'
Heraclius asked the translator to convey to me the
following, I asked you about his family and your reply was
that he belonged to a very noble family. In fact all the
Apostles come from noble families amongst their respective
peoples. I questioned you whether anybody else amongst you
claimed such a thing, your reply was in the negative. If
the answer had been in the affirmative, I would have
thought that this man was following the previous man's
statement. Then I asked you whether anyone of his ancestors
was a king. Your reply was in the negative, and if it had
been in the affirmative, I would have thought that this man
wanted to take back his ancestral kingdom.
I
further asked whether he was ever accused of telling lies
before he said what he said, and your reply was in the
negative. So I wondered how a person who does not tell a
lie about others could ever tell a lie about Allah. I, then
asked you whether the rich people followed him or the poor.
You replied that it was the poor who followed him. And in
fact all the Apostle have been followed by this very class
of people. Then I asked you whether his followers were
increasing or decreasing. You replied that they were
increasing, and in fact this is the way of true faith, till
it is complete in all respects. I further asked you whether
there was anybody, who, after embracing his religion,
became displeased and discarded his religion. Your reply
was in the negative, and in fact this is (the sign of) true
faith, when its delight enters the hearts and mixes with
them completely. I asked you whether he had ever betrayed.
You replied in the negative and likewise the Apostles never
betray. Then I asked you what he ordered you to do. You
replied that he ordered you to worship Allah and Allah
alone and not to worship any thing along with Him and
forbade you to worship idols and ordered you to pray, to
speak the truth and to be chaste. If what you have said is
true, he will very soon occupy this place underneath my
feet and I knew it (from the scriptures) that he was going
to appear but I did not know that he would be from you, and
if I could reach him definitely, I would go immediately to
meet him and if I were with him, I would certainly wash his
feet.' Heraclius then asked for the letter addressed by
Allah's Apostle
which was delivered by Dihya to the Governor of Busra, who
forwarded it to Heraclius to read. The contents of the
letter were as follows: "In the name of Allah the
Beneficent, the Merciful (This letter is) from Muhammad the
slave of Allah and His Apostle to Heraclius the ruler of
Byzantine. Peace be upon him, who follows the right path.
Furthermore I invite you to Islam, and if you become a
Muslim you will be safe, and Allah will double your reward,
and if you reject this invitation of Islam you will be
committing a sin by misguiding your Arisiyin (peasants).
(And I recite to you Allah's Statement:)
'O
people of the scripture! Come to a word common to you and
us that we worship none but Allah and that we associate
nothing in worship with Him, and that none of us shall take
others as Lords beside Allah. Then, if they turn away, say:
Bear witness that we are Muslims (those who have
surrendered to Allah).' (3:64).
Abu Sufyan then added, "When Heraclius had finished his
speech and had read the letter, there was a great hue and
cry in the Royal Court. So we were turned out of the court.
I told my companions that the question of Ibn-Abi-Kabsha)
(the Prophet Muhammad) has become so prominent that even
the King of Bani Al-Asfar (Byzantine) is afraid of him.
Then I started to become sure that he (the Prophet) would
be the conqueror in the near future till I embraced Islam
(i.e. Allah guided me to it)."
The sub narrator adds, "Ibn An-Natur was the Governor of
llya' (Jerusalem) and Heraclius was the head of the
Christians of Sham. Ibn An-Natur narrates that once while
Heraclius was visiting ilya' (Jerusalem), he got up in the
morning with a sad mood. Some of his priests asked him why
he was in that mood? Heraclius was a foreteller and an
astrologer. He replied, 'At night when I looked at the
stars, I saw that the leader of those who practice
circumcision had appeared (become the conqueror). Who are
they who practice circumcision?' The people replied,
'Except the Jews nobody practices circumcision, so you
should not be afraid of them (Jews).
'Just Issue orders to kill every Jew present in the
country.'
While they were discussing it, a messenger sent by the king
of Ghassan to convey the news of Allah's Apostle to
Heraclius was brought in. Having heard the news, he (Heraclius)
ordered the people to go and see whether the messenger of
Ghassan was circumcised. The people, after seeing him, told
Heraclius that he was circumcised. Heraclius then asked him
about the Arabs. The messenger replied, 'Arabs also
practice circumcision.'
(After hearing that) Heraclius remarked that sovereignty of
the 'Arabs had appeared. Heraclius then wrote a letter to
his friend in Rome who was as good as Heraclius in
knowledge. Heraclius then left for Homs. (a town in Syrian
and stayed there till he received the reply of his letter
from his friend who agreed with him in his opinion about
the emergence of the Prophet and the fact that he was a
Prophet. On that Heraclius invited all the heads of the
Byzantines to assemble in his palace at Homs. When they
assembled, he ordered that all the doors of his palace be
closed. Then he came out and said, 'O Byzantines! If
success is your desire and if you seek right guidance and
want your empire to remain then give a pledge of allegiance
to this Prophet (i.e. embrace Islam).'
(On hearing the views of Heraclius) the people ran towards
the gates of the palace like onagers but found the doors
closed. Heraclius realized their hatred towards Islam and
when he lost the hope of their embracing Islam, he ordered
that they should be brought back in audience.
(When they returned) he said, 'What already said was just
to test the strength of your conviction and I have seen
it.' The people prostrated before him and became pleased
with him, and this was the end of Heraclius's story (in
connection with his faith).
Sahih Bukhari:Volume 7, Book 62, Number 41:
Narrated 'Uqba bin Al-Harith:
I married a woman and then a black lady came to us and said,
"I have suckled you both (you and your wife)." So I came to
the Prophet and said, "I married so-and-so and then a black
lady came to us and said to me, 'I have suckled both of you.'
But I think she is a liar." The Prophet turned his face away
from me and I moved to face his face, and said, "She is a
liar." The Prophet said, "How (can you keep her as your wife)
when that lady has said that she has suckled both of you? So
abandon (i.e., divorce) her (your wife)."
Salaams
to animals?
Hadith - Malik's Muwatta
Book 56, Number 56.1.4
Malik related to me from Yahya ibn Said that Isa ibn Maryam
[Jesus, r.a.] encountered a pig on the road. He said to it,
"Go in peace." Somebody asked, "Do you say this to a pig?"
Isa (r.a.) said, "I fear lest I accustom my tongue to evil
speech."
Salaams while urinating?
Hadith - Abu Dawood 17,
Narrated Mahajir ibn Qunfudh
Muhajir came to the Prophet
while he was urinating. He saluted him. The Prophet
did not return the salutation to him until he performed
ablution. He then apologised to him, saying:
I disliked remembering Allah except in
the state of purification.
Hadith - Sahih Muslim 721, Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar, r.a.
A
person happened to pass by the Messenger of Allah
when he was making water and saluted him, but he did not
respond to his salutation.
Sahih
Bukhari:Volume 7, Book 62, Number 50:
Narrated 'Ali:
I said to Ibn 'Abbas,
"During the battle of Khaibar the Prophet forbade (Nikah-al-Mut'a)
Al-Mut'a and the eating of donkey's meat."
Praising Allah for a Healthy Son
or Daughter
Hadith - Bukhari's Book of Manners #1261
Kathir
ibn 'Ubayd said, "Whenever a child was born among them, 'A'ishah
would not ask if it were a boy or a girl. Instead she would
ask, 'Is the child healthy (and without defect)?' If she was
told, 'Yes,' she would say, 'Al-hamdulilah ar-Rabeel Alameen
(All praise is for Allah, Lord of All the Worlds.'
Praying for the Newborn
Hadith - Bukhari's Book of Manners #1260
Mu'awiyah ibn Qurrah said, "When my son Iyas was born, I
invited several of the Companions of the Prophet [to a feast]
and fed them. Then they prayed (for me and my son). I said,
'You have prayed, and may Allah bless you for your prayers.
Now, I am going to pray, so please say "Ameen" [to all that I
pray for]. Then I prayed long for my son's religion, his mind,
and so on."
Not Replying to Salaams
Hadith - Al-Tirmidhi 41, Narrated Uthman ibn Affan
When the Prophet
died, some of his companions were so much aggrieved (at his
death) that they were disposed to doubts. Uthman said: I was
one of them. While I was sitting there happened to pass by me
Umar and he offered me salutation which I did not notice. Umar
made a complaint of that to AbuBakr. Then both of them came and
offered me salutation and
-
AbuBakr said: What prompted you to ignore the salutation of
your brother, Umar.
-
I said: I never did that.
-
Umar said: By Allah, of course you did that.
-
I said: By Allah I did not perceive that you passed by me and
paid salutation.
-
AbuBakr said: Uthman is speaking the truth and something must
have absorbed your mind (that you did not take notice of this
matter).
-
I said: Yes it is so.
-
He said: What is that?
-
I said: Allah has taken away His Prophet SAAWS before we
asked him how we could free ourselves from the snares of the
world and the devil.
-
AbuBakr said: I did ask about that.
-
So I got near to him and said to him: May my father and
mother be taken as ransom for you and you were the worthiest
to ask.
-
Thereupon AbuBakr said: I said to Allah's Messenger (peace be
upon him), how one could free oneself from the snares of the
world and devil.
-
Thereupon Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: He who
accepted from me the word that I presented to my uncle which
he rejected is the freedom (from them) (Affirmation of the
oneness of Allah and the Apostlehood of Muhammad).
[Transmitted by Ahmad]
Hadith - Al-Tirmidhi 4249, Narrated Anas ibn Malik
Anas or someone else told that Allah's Messenger
asked permission to enter the house of Sa'd ibn Ubadah saying,
"Peace and Allah's mercy be upon you." Sa'd replied, "And upon
you be peace and Allah's mercy," but did not speak loud enough
for the Prophet to hear. He gave the salutation three times and
Sa'd responded three times, but did not speak loud enough for
him to hear, so the Prophet (peace be upon him) went away. Sa'd
went after him and said, "Messenger of Allah, for whom I would
give my father and mother as ransom, you did not give a
salutation without my hearing it and responding to you, but I
did not speak loud enough for you to hear because I wanted to
receive many of your salutations and so receive great
blessing." They then entered the house and he offered him
raisins which Allah's Messenger
ate. Then when he finished he said, "May
the righteous eat your food, may the angels invoke blessings on
you, and may those who have been fasting break their fast with
you!"
It
is transmitted in Sharh as-Sunnah.
More About the Jinn
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Islam
Hadith - Sahih Bukhari 4:533, Narrated Jabi bin 'Abdullah
The
Prophet
said, "Cover your utensils and tie your
water skins, and close your doors and keep your children close
to you at night, as the Jinns spread out at such time and
snatch things away. When you go to bed, put out your lights,
for the mischief-doer (i.e. the rat) may drag away the wick of
the candle and burn the dwellers of the house." Ata
said, "The devils." (instead of the Jinns).
Hadith - Sunan of Abu Dawood, Narrated Abu Sa'id al-Khudri
Muhammad ibn AbuYahya said that his father told that he and his
companion went to AbuSa'id al-Khudri to pay a sick visit to
him. He said: Then we came out from him and met a companion of
ours who wanted to go to him. We went ahead and sat in the
mosque. He then came back and told us that he heard AbuSa'id
al-Khudri say: The Apostle of Allah
said: Some snakes are jinn; so when
anyone sees one of them in his house, he should give it a
warning three times. If it return (after that), he should kill
it, for it is a devil.
Hadith - Al-Muwatta 54.33
...The snake stirred on the end of the spear and the youth fell
dead. No one knew which of them died first, the snake or the
youth. That was mentioned to the Messenger of Allah
said, "There are jinn in Madina who have
become muslim. When you see one of them, call out to it for
three days. If it appears after that, then kill it, for it is a
shaytan." "'
Hadith - Muwatta, 49.21
...Shaytan does not open a locked door or
untie a tied knot, or uncover a vessel.
Hadith - Tirmidhi #350
Allah's Messenger
said: Don't cleanse yourself with dung or
with bones for that is the food of your brothers from amongst
the Jinn.
[Transmitted by Tirmidhi, Nasa'i with this exception that he
did not make mention of: The Food of your brothers from amongst
the jinn.]
The Noble Qur'an - Ar-Rahmaan 55:56
Wherein both will be those (maidens) restraining their glances
upon their husbands, whom no man or jinn yatmithhunna

Hadith - Abu Dawood 1046, Narrated Ali ibn Abu Talib
Ali
said on the pulpit in the mosque of Kufah: When Friday comes,
the devils go to the markets with their flags, and involve
people in their needs and prevent them from the Friday prayer.

Men Greeting Women
Hadith - Malik's Muwatta Book 53, Number 53.1.2
Yahya related to me from Malik from Wahb ibn Kaysan that
Muhammad ibn Amr ibn Ata said, "I was sitting with Abdullah ibn
Abbas when a Yemeni man came in. He said, 'Peace be upon you,
and the mercy of Allah and His blessing' (as-salamu alaykum wa
rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu), and then he added something more
to that. Ibn Abbas said (and at that time his eyesight had
gone), 'Who is this?' People said, 'This is a Yemeni who has
come to see you,' and they introduced him. Ibn Abbas said, 'The
greeting ends with the word blessing.' "
Yahya said that Malik was asked, "Does one greet a woman?" He
said, "As for an old woman, I do not disapprove of it. As for a
young woman, I do not like it."
Inviting Guests to Celebrate a
Birth
Hadith - Bukhari's Book of Manners #1258
Bilal
ibn Ka'b said, "Ibrahim ibn Adham, 'Abd al 'Aziz ibn Qarir,
Musa ibn Yasar, and myself visited Hahya ibn Hassan at his
village (in Palestine). He brought us food. Musa, who was
fasting, did not eat. Yahya said, 'A man known as Abu Qarasifah
from the tribe of Kinanah who had been one of the Companions of
the Prophet of Allah, upon him be peace, led us in salah
(prostration prayer) for forty years in this mosque. It was his
habit to fast one day and skip the next. A boy was born to my
father on a day when Abu Qarasifah was fasting, and he invited
Abu Qarasifah to attend the feast. So Abu Qarasifah broke his
fast.' The Ibrahim stood up and brushed Yahya off with his
cloak*, and Musa broke his fast.
*this
was done as a sign of respect for the man.
How to congratulate new parents
and how they should respond
Hadith - An-Nawawi, Kitabul-Adhkar, p. 349.
Baarakallahu laka fil mauhoobi laka, wa shakartal waahiba, wa
balagha ashaddahu, wa ruziqta birrahu. ["May Allah bless you
with His gift to you, and may the receiver give thanks and
reach the maturity of years and be granted piety."]
The
reply is: Barakallahu laka wa baraka 'alaika, wa jaza kallahu
khairan, wa raza-qakallahu mithalhu, wa ajzala thawabaka. ["May
Allah bless you, and shower His blessings upon you, and may
Allah reward you well and bestow upon you its like and reward
you with open hands."]
Idda of Widows when Pregnant
Hadith - Al-Muwatta 29.83
Yahya
related to me from Malik from Abdu Rabbih ibn Said ibn Qays
that Abu Salama ibn Abd ar-Rahman said that Abdullah ibn Abbas
and Abu Hurayra were asked when a pregnant woman whose husband
had died could remarry. Ibn Abbas said, "At the end of two
periods." Abu Hurayra
said,
"When she gives birth, she is free to marry." Abu Salama ibn
Abd ar-Rahman visited Umm Salama, the wife of the Prophet, may
Allah bless him and grant him peace, and asked her about it Umm
Salama said, ''Subaya al-Aslamiya gave birth half a month after
the death of her husband, and two men asked to marry her. One
was young and the other was old. She preferred the young man
and so the older man said, 'You are not free to marry yet.' Her
family were away and he hoped that when her family came, they
would give her to him. She went to the Messenger of Allah, may
Allah bless him and grant him peace, and he said, 'You are free
to marry, so marry whomever you wish.' "
Greeting All in a Muslim Region
Hadith - Malik's Muwatta Book 53, Number 53.3.6
Yahya related to me from Malik from Ishaq ibn Abdullah ibn Abi
Talha that at-Tufayl ibn Ubayy ibn Kab told him that he visited
Abdullah ibn Umar one morning and went out with him to the
market, and when they were out, Abdullah ibn Umar did not pass
by anyone selling poor merchandise or selling commodities or a
needy person or anyone but that he greeted them.
At-Tufayl
said, "I came to Abdullah ibn Umar one day and he asked me to
follow him to the market. I said to him, 'What will you do in
the market if you will not stop to sell nor seek any goods or
barter with them or sit in any of the assemblies or market?'
Abdullah ibn Umar said that we should sit down and talk, and
then he explained, 'Abu Batni, (lit. father of the belly, at-Tufayl
had a prominent stomach), we go out in the morning only for the
sake of the greeting. We greet whomever we meet.' "
Greeting During a Khutba (Friday
Sermon)
One
should not speak during the khutbah.
Hadith - Al-Muwatta 5.8
Yahya
related to me from Malik from Abu'n Nadr, the mawla of Umar ibn
Ubaydullah, from Malik ibn Abi Amir that Uthman ibn Affan used
to say in khutbas, and he would seldom omit it if he was giving
the khutba, "When the imam stands delivering the khutba on the
day of jumua, listen and pay attention, for there is the same
portion for someone who pays attention but cannot hear as for
someone who pays attention and hears. And when the iqama of the
prayer is called, straighten your rows and make your shoulders
adjacent to each other, because the straightening of the rows
is part of the completion of the prayer." Then he would not say
the takbir until some men who had been entrusted with
straightening the rows came and told him that they were
straight. Then he would say the takbir.
Greeting Jews and Christians
Hadith - Sahih Bukhari Book 25, Number 5389, Narrated
AbuHurayrah
Allah's Messenger
said: Do not greet the Jews and the
Christians before they greet you and when you meet any one of
them on the roads force him to go to the narrowest part of it.
Hadith - Malik's Muwatta Book 53, Number 53.2.3
Yahya related to me from Malik from Abdullah ibn Dinar that
Abdullah ibn Umar said that the Messenger of Allah
said, "When a jew greets you, and says
'Death to you' (as-samu alaykum) say, 'And to you.' "
Yahya said, "Malik was asked whether a person who greeted a jew
or christian, should apologise for it. He said, 'No'."
From Jaabir Ibn Abdullaah who said: "Men from amongst the Jews
greeted the messenger of Allaah
.
So they said: 'As-Saam Alay Kum (May death be upon you) o
Aba-al-Qaasim.' So he
said, 'And unto you' (Wa Alay Kum).
So Aa'ishah(r) became angry, and she said, 'Did you not hear
what they said!?!' So he
said,
'Indeed, and I returned it on them, and
verily we answer them, and they don't answer us.'"
[Saheeh Muslim 5/7 of the Arabic.
Shaykh Al Albaanee cites it in Mukhtasar Saheeh Muslim no.
1433, p. 672.]
It
is worthy to note that scholars such as Imaam Muslim considered
this reply to be general, and not to be specific to the
situation mentioned.
Greeting
muslims with something other than salaam
The Noble Qur'an Al-Mujadilah
58:8
Have you not seen those who were forbidden to hold secret
counsels, and afterwards returned to that which they had been
forbidden, and conspired together for sin and wrong doing and
disobedience to the Messenger (Muhammad SAW). And when they
come to you, they greet you with a greeting wherewith Allâh
greets you not, and say within themselves: "Why should Allâh
punish us not for what we say?" Hell will be sufficient for
them, they will burn therein, and worst indeed is that
destination!
Hadith - Al-Tabarani
If
someone begins speaking before making the greetings, he should
not be responded to until he gives the proper greetings.
During Salah
Hadith
- Al-Tirmidhi #991, Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar,
Transmitted by Tirmidhi.
I asked
Bilal: How did Allah's Apostle
respond to them as they greeted him while he was in prayer?
Thereupon he said: He only made a gesture with his hands (in
order to respond to the greeting).
Hadith
- Sunan of Abu Dawood 927, Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar
The
Apostle of Allah
went to Quba to offer prayer. Then the Ansar (the Helpers)
came to him and gave him a salutation while he was engaged in
prayer. I asked Bilal: How did you find the Apostle of Allah
responding to them when they gave him a salutation while he
was engaged in prayer. He replied: In this way, and Ja'far
ibn Awn demonstrated by spreading his palm, and keeping its
inner side below and its back side above.
Hadith -
Abu Dawood 924, Narrated Abdullah ibn Mas'ud
We used to
salute during prayer and talk about our needs. I came to the
Apostle of Allah
and found him praying. I saluted him, but he did not respond
to me. I recalled what happened to me in the past and in the
present. When the Apostle of Allah
finished his prayer, he said to me: Allah, the Almighty,
creates new command as He wishes, and Allah, the Exalted, has
sent a fresh command that you must not talk during prayer. He
then returned my salutation.
Hadith -
Bukhari and Muslim
Ibn Mas'ud
reports: "We used to greet the Messenger of Allah while he
was in salah and he would respond to our greeting. When we
returned from Abyssinia, we greeted him [during prayer] but
he did not respond to our salutation. We said to him: 'O
Messenger of Allah, we used to greet you while you were in
salah and you used to respond to us!' He
then said: 'Prayer demands one's
complete attention.'"
End a Three Day Dispute with
Salaams
Hadith - Sunan of Abu Dawood 4894, Narrated Abu Hurayrah
The Prophet
said: It is not allowable for a
believer to keep from a believer for more than three days. If
three days pass, he should meet him and give him a
salutation, and if he replies to it they will both have
shared in the reward; but if he does not reply he will bear
his sin (according to Ahmad's
version) and the one who gives
the salutation will have come forth from the sin of keeping
apart.
Every human has a partner Jinn
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Islam
Hadith - Sahih Muslim 6757, Narrated Abdullah ibn Mas'ud,
similar narration 6759 by 'Aisha, r.a.
Allah's Apostle
said: There is none amongst you with
whom is not an attache from amongst the jinn (devil).
They (the Companions) said: Allah's Apostle
with you too? Thereupon he said: Yes,
but Allah helps me against him and so I am safe from his hand
and he does not command me but for good.
Fortune-tellers/Soothsayers
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Islam
Hadith - Al-Bukhari 7.657, Narrated 'Aisha, r.a.
Some people asked Allah's Apostle (saaws) about the
foretellers. He said. -They are nothing." They said, -O
Allah's Apostle! Sometimes they tell us of a thing which
turns out to be true." Allah's Apostle said,
"A Jinn snatches that true word and
pours it into the ear of his friend (the foreteller) (as one
puts something into a bottle). The foreteller then mixes with
that word one hundred lies."
Do not wave like Christians or use fingers like Jews
Hadith - Al-Tirmidhi 4649, Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-'As
Allah's Messenger
said, "He does not belong to us who
imitates other people. Do not imitate the Jews or the
Christians, for the Jews' salutation is to make a gesture with
the fingers and the Christians' salutation is to make a gesture
with the palms of the hands."
[Tirmidhi transmitted it, saying
its isnad is weak]
Circumcision
Fiqh 1.21a
This
prevents dirt from getting on one's penis, and also makes it
easy to keep it clean. For women, it involves cutting the
outer portion of the clitoris. Abu Hurairah reported that the
Messenger of Allah said, "Ibrahim circumcised himself after
he was eighty years old." (Related by al-Bukhari.) Many
scholars say that it is obligatory.' The Shaf'iyyah maintain
that it should be done on the seventh day.
Circumcising a female is not a
recommended act, but it is considered permissible so long as
very little cutting is done. Be careful to find a reputable
person to perform circumcision on a female, as many errors
are made by the untrained; check with those who have received
the circumcision to ensure safety and proper cutting
technique.
Hadith - Abu Dawood #5251, Narrated Umm Atiyyah al-Ansariyyah
A
woman used to perform circumcision in Medina. The Prophet
(peace be upon him) said to her: Do not cut severely as that
is better for a woman and more desirable for a husband.
Volume 1, Book 2,

Narrated Ibn 'Umar:
Allah's Apostle said: Islam is based on (the following)
five (principles):
1. To testify that none has the right to be worshipped but
Allah and Muhammad is Allah's Apostle.
2. To offer the (compulsory congregational) prayers
dutifully and perfectly.
3. To pay Zakat (i.e. obligatory charity) .
4. To perform Hajj. (i.e. Pilgrimage to Mecca)
5. To observe fast during the month of Ramadan.

bashfulness, and scruple, etc.) is a part of faith."

Blood Money Due for deceased
child is also due for deceased Fetus
Hadith - Sahih Bukhari 8.732, Narrated Abu Huraira
Allah's Apostle gave the judgment that a male or female slave
should be given in Qisas for an abortion case of a woman from
the tribe of Bani Lihyan (as blood money for the fetus) but the
lady on whom the penalty had been imposed died, so the Prophets
ordered that her property be inherited by her offspring and her
husband and that the penalty be paid by her Asaba.

Ibn Abbas:
When the Prophet p.b.u.h sent Muadh to Yemen, he said
to him, "You are going to a nation from the people of the
Scripture, so let the first thing to which you will invite
them, be the Tauhid of Allah. If they learn that, tell them
that Allah has enjoined on them, five prayers to be offered
in one day and one night. And if they pray, tell them that
Allah has enjoined on them Zakat of their properties and it
is to be taken from the rich among them and given to the
poor. And if they agree to that, then take from them Zakat
but avoid the best property of the people."

All Babies are Born Muslim
Hadith - Sahih Bukhari 8.597 (See also 2.467), Narrated Abu
Huraira

Allah's
Apostle was asked about the offspring of the pagans. He said,
"Allah knows what they would have done (were they to live)."
Narrated
Abu Huraira: Allah's Apostle said, "No child is born but has the
Islamic Faith, but its parents turn it into a Jew or a Christian.
It is as you help the animals give birth. Do you find among their
offspring a mutilated one before you mutilate them yourself?" The
people said, "O Allah's Apostle! What do you think about those
(of them) who die young?" The Prophet said, "Allah knows what
they would have done (were they to live)."
The
Noble Qur'an Ar-Rum 30:30

Islâmic Monotheism Hanifa (worship none but Allâh Alone)
Allâh's Fitrah (i.e. Allâh's Islâmic Monotheism), with
which He has created mankind. No change let there be in
Khalqillâh (i.e. the Religion of Allâh Islâmic Monotheism), that
is the straight religion, but most of men know not.
A Miscarriage or Murder of Fetus
Caused by Another Person
Hadith -
Sahih Bukhari 9.42A, Narrated Hishams father from Al Mughira bin
Shuba
Allah's Apostle
gave the judgment that a male or female slave should be given in
Qisas for an abortion case of a woman from the tribe of Bani
Lihyan (as blood money for the fetus) but the lady on whom the
penalty had been imposed died, so the Prophets ordered that her
property be inherited by her offspring and her husband and that
the penalty be paid by her Asaba.
Hadith -
Sahih Bukhari 9.420, Narrated Al Mughira bin Shuba
'Umar bin Al-Khattab
asked (the people) about the Imlas of a woman, i.e., a woman who
has an abortion because of having been beaten on her abdomen,
saying, "Who among you has heard anything about it from the
Prophet?" I said, "I did.) He said, "What is that?" I said, "I
heard the Prophet saying, 'Its Diya (blood money) is either a
male or a female slave.' " 'Umar said, "Do not leave till you
present witness in support of your statement." So I went out, and
found Muhammad bin Maslama. I brought him, and he bore witness
with me that he had heard the Prophet saying, "Its Diya (blood
money) is either a male slave or a female slave."
Hadith - Abu
Dawood 4555, Narrated Umar ibn al-Khattab
Ibn Abbas said:
Umar asked about the decision of the Prophet (peace be upon him)
about that (i.e. abortion) Haml ibn Malik ibn an-Nabighah got up
and said: I was between two women. One of them struck another
with a rolling-pin killing both her and what was in her womb. So
the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) gave judgment that the
blood-wit for the unborn child should be a male or a female slave
of the best quality and that she should be killed.
A Cause of Miscarriage
Hadith - Sahih Bukhari 4.518, Narrated Ibn Umar
That
he heard the Prophet delivering a sermon on the pulpit saying,
"Kill snakes and kill Dhu-at-Tufyatain (i.e. a snake with two
white lines on its back) and ALBATROSS (i.e. a snake with short
or mutilated tail) for they destroy the sight of one's eyes and
bring about abortion." ('Abdullah bin 'Umar further added):
Once while I was chasing a snake in order to kill it, Abu
Lubaba called me saying: "Don't kill it," I said. "Allah's
Apostle ordered us to kill snakes." He said, "But later on he
prohibited the killing of snakes living in the houses." (Az-Zubri
said. "Such snakes are called Al-Awamir.")
Hadith - Sahih Bukhari 4.529, Narrated Abu Mulaika
Ibn
Umar used to kill snakes, but afterwards he forbade their
killing and said, "Once the Prophet pulled down a wall and saw
a cast-off skin of a snake in it. He said, 'Look for the
snake.' They found it and the Prophet said, 'Kill it.' For this
reason I used to kill snakes. Later on I met Abu Lubaba who
told me the Prophet said, 'Do not kill snakes except the
short-tailed or mutilated-tailed snake with two white lines on
its back, for it causes abortion and makes one blind. So kill
it.' "
Sahih Bukhari:Volume 7, Book 62, Number 27:
Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet said, "A woman is married for four things, i.e.,
her wealth, her family status, her beauty and her religion. So
you should marry the religious woman (otherwise) you will be a
losers.
Sahih Bukhari:Volume 7, Book 62, Number 22:
Narrated Anas:
The Prophet stayed for three days between Khaibar and Medina,
and there he consummated his marriage to Safiyya bint Huyai. I
invited the Muslims to the wedding banquet in which neither
meat nor bread was offered. He ordered for leather
dining-sheets to be spread, and dates, dried yoghurt and butter
were laid on it, and that was the Prophet's wedding banquet.
The Muslims wondered, "Is she (Saffiyya) considered as his wife
or his slave girl?" Then they said, "If he orders her to veil
herself, she will be one of the mothers of the Believers; but
if he does not order her to veil herself, she will be a slave
girl. So when the Prophet proceeded from there, he spared her a
space behind him (on his she-camel) and put a screening veil
between her and the people.
Sahih Bukhari:Volume 7, Book 62, Number 20:
Narrated Abu Burda's father:
Allah's Apostle said, any man who has a slave girl whom he
educates properly, teaches good manners, manumits and marries
her, will get a double reward And if any man of the people of
the Scriptures believes in his own prophet and then believes in
me too, he will (also) get a double reward And any slave who
fulfills his duty to his master and to his Lord, will (also)
get a double reward."
Sahih Bukhari:Volume 7, Book 62,
Number 14:
Narrated 'Aisha :
I said, "O Allah's Apostle!
Suppose you landed in a valley where there is a tree of which
something has been eaten and then you found trees of which
nothing has been eaten, of which tree would you let your camel
graze?" He said, "(I will let my camel graze) of the one of
which nothing has been eaten before." (The sub-narrator added:
'Aisha meant that Allah's Apostle had not married a virgin
besides herself .)

said: He who offered prayer for the dead, for him is the
reward of one qirat, and he who attended its burial, he would
have two qirats as his reward. And qirat is equivalent to
Uhud.

Memorise the Qur'an
Narrated by
Abdullah ibn Umar(Radhiallaho anho):
Allah's Messenger (sallAllaahu 'alaihi wasallam)
said: The example of a man who has memorised the Qur'an is
like that of a hobbled camel. If he remained vigilant, he
would be able to retain it (with him), and if he loosened the
hobbled camel it would escape.

Volume 1, Book 3, Number 56:
Narrated Abu Huraira:
While the Prophet was saying
something in a gathering, a Bedouin came and asked him, "When
would the Hour (Doomsday) take place?" Allah's Apostle continued
his talk, so some people said that Allah's Apostle had heard the
question, but did not like what that Bedouin had asked. Some of
them said that Alllah's Apostle had not heard it. When the
Prophet finished his speech, he said, "Where is the questioner,
who enquired about the Hour (Doomsday)?" The Bedouin said, "I am
here, O Allah's Apostle ." Then the Prophet said, "When honesty
is lost, then wait for the Hour (Doomsday)." The Bedouin said,
"How will that be lost?" The Prophet said, "When the power or
authority comes in the hands of unfit persons, then wait for the
Hour (Doomsday.)"

Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet p.b.u.h said, "When it is a Friday, the angels
stand at the gate of the mosque and keep on writing the names of
the persons coming to the mosque in succession according to their
arrivals. The example of the one who enters the mosque in the
earliest hour is that of one offering a camel (in sacrifice). The
one coming next is like one offering a cow and then a ram and
then a chicken and then an egg respectively. When the Imam comes
out (for Jumua prayer) they (i.e. angels) fold their papers and
listen to the Khutba."
[Sahih Bukhari Volume 2, Book 13, Number 51]
Narrated 'Abdullah:
The best talk (speech) is Allah's Book 'Quran), and the best
way is the way of Muhammad p.b.u.h, and the worst matters are the
heresies (those new things which are introduced into the
religion); and whatever you have been promised will surely come
to pass, and you cannot escape (it).
[Sahih Bukhari Volume 9, Book 92, Number 382]
Narrated Jarir bin
'Abdullah:
Allah's Apostle (p.b.u.h) said, "Allah will not be merciful to
those who are not merciful to mankind."

Narrated Abu Musa:
A man came to the Prophet p.b.u.h. and asked, "O Allah's
Apostle! What kind of fighting is in Allah's cause? (I ask this),
for some of us fight because of being enraged and angry and some
for the sake of his pride and haughtiness." The Prophet raised
his head (as the questioner was standing) and said, "He who
fights so that Allah's Word (Islam) should be superior, then he
fights in Allah's cause."

Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said,
“ Certainly the most
abhorred of permissible actions in the sight of Allah is
talaaq (divorce)”(Mishkaat)
Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said,
“A woman who asks her
husband for talaaq without a valid reason will be deprived
of the fragrance of Jannah (paradise). (Mishkaat)
Commentary:
According to the
Hadith, the most abhorred of permissible actions in the sight
of Allah Ta’ala certainly is Talaaq. It is most painful and
catastrophic to observe the sheer negligence and frequency
with which this decisive practice occurs today. The primary
reasons for talaaq being so rampant are two fold. Sheer
ignorance and uncontrolled anger.
Ignorance and
anger are two dangerous diseases, which every Muslim should
seek refuge from and ensure that he is not a victim. May
Allah Ta’ala protect this Ummah, grant us true understanding
of his Deen, and give us perfect ability to practice. Aameen

Sahih
Bukhari:Volume 7, Book 62, Number 15:
Narrated 'Aisha:
Allah's
Apostle said (to me), "You have been shown to me twice in (my)
dreams. A man was carrying you in a silken cloth and said to
me, 'This is your wife.' I uncovered it; and behold, it was
you. I said to myself, 'If this dream is from Allah, He will
cause it to come true.' "
Hope
Hadhrat
Ibn Abbaas(radhiyallahu anhu) reported that : " I was(once)
behind Nabi(sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) when he said to me: 'O
son ! I shall inform you of a few things: Remember Allah, and He
will protect you. Remember Allah, and you will find Him close to
you. When you have to ask for something, ask of Allah Ta'ala.
When you require aid, seek His aid. Believe firmly that if all
the creation desires to benefit you in anything, they can never
benefit you, but, that which Allah has decreed for you. If they
ALL unite to harm you, they will not be able to harm you in
anything, but that which Allah has decreed for you." (Tirmizi)
Muslims are
ONE Ummah
Hadhrat
Nu'maan bin Basheer(radhiyallahu anhu) reported that
Rasulullah(sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) said : "
The Believers in their mutual pity,
love and affection are like one body. When an organ is in pain
the whole body has fever and become restless."
(Bukhari, Muslim)
Oppressor
and oppressed
Hadhrat
Anas(radhiyallahu anhu) reported that Rasulullah(sallallahu
alaiyhi wassallam) said : "Help
your brother whether he is an oppressor or an oppressed. Someone
asked, "Messenger of Allah, I will help the oppressed surely,
but, how may I help the oppressor ?" The Prophet(sallallahu
alaiyhi wassallam): Stop him from oppressing someone. That in
itself is helping him." (Bukhari,
Tirmizi)
Help
when needed
Hadhrat
Jabir and Hazrat Talha(radhiyallahu anhum) reported that
Rasulullah(sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) said : "If
a Muslim deserts another Muslim at a time when he is being
disgraced and humiliated then Allah will leave him helpless at a
time when he is in need. But, as for one who helps a Muslim when
he is being disgraced and humiliated, Allah will help him at a
time when he is in need of help."
(Abu Dawud)
Best and
worse Rulers
Hadhrat Awf
bin Maalik(radhiyallahu anhu) reported that Rasulullah(sallallahu
alaiyhi wassallam) said : "
Your best rulers are they whom you
love and they love you, you pray for them and they pray for you.
Your worst rulers are they whom you despise and they despise you,
you curse them and they curse you. "

Istighfaar
and Calamity
Hazrat
Anas(radhiyallahu anhu) describes that Rasulullah(sallaaahu
alayhi wassallam) said that Allah Ta'ala says that sometimes, He
intends to send a calamity to a land; but the idea is given up;
seeing those men who populate His houses(Masjids) and recite "ISTIGHFAAR"
in the late hours of the night; and He witholds the calamity. (Bayhaqi)
Muslims do not tyrannise one another(Muslim Rulers to take note)
Hadhrat
Abdullah bin Umar(radhiyallahu anhu) reported that
Rasulullah(sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) said : "
A Muslim is the brother of another
Muslim. He does not tyrannise him nor does he hand him over to
his enemy. As for him who looks after the needs of his brother,
Allah will look after his needs. If anyone removes an anxiety of
a Muslim, Allah will remove an anxiety from his anxieties on the
Day of Resurrection....."
(Abu Dawud)
Sahih
Bukhari:Volume 7, Book 62, Number 4:
Narrated
'Abdullah:
We were
with the Prophet while we were young and had no wealth whatever.
So Allah's Apostle said, "O young people! Whoever among you can
marry, should marry, because it helps him lower his gaze and
guard his modesty (i.e. his private parts from committing illegal
sexual intercourse etc.), and whoever is not able to marry,
should fast, as fasting diminishes his sexual power."
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
"Whoever calls people to right guidance will have a reward like that
of those who follow him, without that detracting from their reward in
the slightest. And whoever calls people to misguidance will have a
burden of sin like that of those who follow him, without that
detracting from their burden in the slightest."
Narrated by Muslim, 2674, from the hadeeth of Abu Hurayrah.
Sahih
Bukhari:Volume 7, Book 62, Number 44:
Narrated Jabir:
Allah's
Apostle forbade that a woman should be married to man along
with her paternal or maternal aunt.
