In
the Name of Allah, Most

9 : 34
O those of you who believe! Many Jewish rabbis and Christian monks devour the wealth which belongs to mankind with dishonesty and impede them from the path of Allah! To those who hoard up gold and silver without spending it in Allah's way, deliver them the tidings (O Mohammed) of an impending doom
9 : 35
On the Day when their treasures will be smelted in the flames of hell, and then with it will they be branded on their foreheads and their laps and their backs (saying) : 'This is what you hoarded for yourselves so taste now the flavour of that which you hoarded!'
(During Medieval times, when Christianity degenerated to the worst possible extent, dominated by the greedy Roman Papacy at the top and a chain of condescending priests across Christendom exploiting uninformed adherents and their blind faith for accumulation of wealth by turning redemption into a cheap commodity to be bought and sold like any other commodity, its price governed by the severity of sins committed on earth and the quality of rewards offered in Heaven! Letters are known to have been written by Pontiffs addressed to heavenly father, for the absolution of the bearer's soul and 'marketed' by Archbishops and Bishops across the Papal States to those who could afford them, to be concealed inside their coffins and buried in their graves, by way of a guarantee that they would no longer be held accountable to Him for their offences and indiscretions. Christianity was in such a shambles that many theologians began to question the legitimacy of the Papal domain; the Reformation of the Western Church was spearheaded by men like Martin Luther in Germany and Calvin in France which led to the establishment of the new Protestant Church in opposition to the old Roman Catholic Church, still dogged by the same hierarchy as before, resulting in further fragmentation of a noble Faith that was launched by one of the noblest and cherished Prophets of Allah.
Even though these verses are seemingly aimed at the Jewish and Christian rabbis and priests, many commentators opine that they were revealed as a caution to Muslims too that, wealth from which a due portion towards alms and charities (Sadaqa and Zakaat) has not been taken out, even if it be a buried treasure, it would be smelted in the flames of hell and those to whom it belonged would be branded on their foreheads with it.
