Fifth Crusade begins, and considerably alarms Muslims.

Death of Farid od-Din (1142-1220) Persian mystical poet. His greatest work was The Conference of the Birds.

Fifth Crusade fails due to divisions and bad strategy.

Sixth Crusade results in the peaceful surrender of much of Jerusalem and Bethlehem, and access to the sea, to the westerners.

1244/5 Muslims recapture Jerusalem.

Mongol army captures Baghdad. The city is destroyed and all the inhabitants killed.

Death of Rumi (1207-1273) the greatest Persian Sufi mystic and poet. Rumi's disciples are called The Whirling Dervishes.

'Abd al-Wahhab (1703-1792) starts to set down the doctrines of the Wahhabi or al-Muwahhidun movement, which urges conformity to the original ideas of Islam.
