		1206 Founding of Sultanate of Delhi. 1212 *Children's Crusade* sets out to capture the Holy Land by love not war. It fails. 1218 *Fifth Crusade* begins, and considerably alarms Muslims. 1220 Death of *Farid od-Din (1142-1220)* Persian mystical poet. His greatest work was The Conference of the Birds. 1221 Fifth Crusade fails due to divisions and bad strategy. 1229 *Sixth Crusade* results in the peaceful surrender of much of Jerusalem and Bethlehem, and access to the sea, to the westerners. 1244/5 Muslims recapture Jerusalem. 1258 Mongol army captures Baghdad. The city is destroyed and all the inhabitants killed. 1273 Death of Rumi (1207-1273) the greatest Persian Sufi mystic and poet. Rumi's disciples are called *The Whirling Dervishes*.

1347-1351 The Black Death kills 25 million in Europe. 1387-1400 Geoffrey Chaucer writes The Canterbury Tales.		1328 Death in prison of Ibn Taymiyah (1263-1328), outstanding theologian who preached that Islam should return to its original sources - the Qur'an and Hadith. 1350 The Bahmani sultanate (1350-1490/1538) rules South India. The area remains under Muslim rule until 1680.

1455 Gutenberg produces the first printed book in Europe. 1492 Columbus crosses the Atlantic.		1453 Constantinople is captured by the Turks. 1492 Muslim rule ends in Spain.

1506 Building of St Peter's Basilica in Rome starts (ends 1615).		1502 Safavid dynasty (1502-1736) takes over Iran and makes Shi'a Islam the state religion. 1530 Qur'an first printed in Arabic by Pagninus Brixiensis in Rome. 1543 Publication of first Latin version of the Qur'an. 1550 Islam spreads to Java and Borneo. 1572 *Battle of Lepanto* Christian navies defeat Ottoman fleet. 1588 Queen Elizabeth I of England proposes alliance of Protestant England with Ottoman Empire against Roman Catholic Spain.

1600-01 First performance of Hamlet by Shakespeare. 1675 Execution of *Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Sikh Guru, in Delhi for refusing to convert to Islam. 1685* Birth of the composers Bach and Handel.		1619 Arrival of first slave ship in Virginia (USA), and thus arrival of first Muslims in USA. 1625 Muslim ships raid the UK's Cornish coast and take 60 people as slaves. 1634 Muslim ships capture two ships travelling between Minehead and Ireland. 1635 6 Moroccan ships in raids around the Scilly Isles (UK). 1649 First English version of the Qur'an.

1776 US Declaration of Independence. 1789 French Revolution. 1798 Malthus publishes his Essay on Population.		c1736 'Abd al-Wahhab (1703-1792) starts to set down the doctrines of the Wahhabi or *al-Muwahhidun* movement, which urges conformity to the original ideas of Islam. This movement has dominated Arabia ever since.
