----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
" Say: If it be that your fathers, your sons, your brothers
your mates, or your kindred;
the wealth that you have gained;
the commerce in which you fear a decline;
or the dwellings in which you delight;
are dearer to you than Allah,
or His Messenger, or the striving in His cause -
then wait until Allah brings about His decision,
and Allah guides not the rebellious. "

The Spiritual Bond
An proper method of communion with Allah incorporates several elements. The
accumulation of these elements molds an effective channel towards the
Spiritual Path. These elements can be traced back to Quranic texts, hadeeths
and supplications. Among them are: hope, fear, humility, devotion, love,
longing, proximity, reliance, purity of soul, repentance, hope for protection,
hope for love and compassion, respect, praise, tranquility, anxiety,
obedience, submission, dzikir and destitution.
Imam Ali Zainal Abidin uttered in one of his prayers:
" Dear Allah, please fill my
heart
with love and fear for You
with belief and faith towards You
with longing for You and
fear of being separated
from You. "
Each element is a key to the doors of Allah's Mercy and Forgiveness. Hope for
love and compassion is the key to the door of His Mercy; and repentance is the
key to the door of His Forgiveness. Each of the elements is categorized as a
path towards Allah (Subhaanahu wa Ta'aalaa). If longing, love and proximity
form one path to reach Allah, then fear and anxiety make another path towards
Him. The same goes for hope and supplication.
Everyone who wants to walk the road towards Allah has to cross every corner
and curve; there is no short cut. Each corner and curve conceals a blessing
you cannot find in another.
Love towards Allah is the most important of all elements. With love, a strong
bond is built between man and his Creator. No other elements can surpass love
in strengthening this spiritual relationship.
The following are some thesis that explains the difference that exists among
the elements.
Allah inspired the prophet Dawud (a.s.):
" oh Dawud, let it be known that
My dzikr
I spare for the chanters,
My Paradise for the obedient of the lot
My Love for those who yearn for Me,
while My Own Self
I reserve for those who love Me. "
Narrated from Imam Shadiq:
" Love is more important than
fear. "
Narrated by Muhammad bin Ya'qub Al-Kulaini from Imam Ja'far Al-Shadiq:
" There are 3 kinds of servants.
They who worship Allah because of fear.
That is the service of slaves.
They who worship Allah just for the reward.
That is the service
of merchants.
And they who worship Allah
because of love.
This is the service of the
free man.
This is the most distinguished of services. "
Narrated by Al-Kulaini from Rasulullah (sollaAllaahu 'alaihi wa sallam):
" The most reverent man is he who
longs for service ('ibadah)
and then floats himself in
it, and relishes it with his heart and
soul. He provides it with a room
in his heart, and ignores
worldly matters -
be they complicated or easy. "
From Imam Ja'far Al-Shadiq:
" The secret of the success of
achievers of His Love
lies on 3 foundations: Fear, hope and love.
Fear is a branch of knowledge. Hope is a branch of
conviction.
And love is a branch of wisdom.
The proof of fear is flight (escape). The proof of hope
is plea.
The proof of love is precedence
of beloved above the rest.
When the knowledge in a
servant's chest is secure, fear will
emerge. And when his fear is
confirmed, he will flee.
By fleeing, he will survive.
When the light of belief
shines in his heart, he will sense a blessing. When his
belief
in the blessing is
resolute, hope will arise. When he has tasted
the sweetness of hope, he will
beg and plea. If his plea is
answered, he will obtain his wishes. If the light of
wisdom has
lit his heart, the wind of
love will blow. When the wind of love
blows, he begins to relish the
protection of his beloved.
He will then place his beloved above the rest and will
immediately execute his commands.
These 3 foundations resemble Al-Haram, a mosque and Ka'bah.
Whoever enters Al-Haram, will
be spared from disturbances
and chaos. Whoever enters a
mosque, will be protected from
evil deeds. And whoever enters Ka'bah, will be guarded
from
matters that distract him
from remembering Allah. "
From Rasulullah (s.a.w.):
" The tremor of love gripping
Prophet Syuaib caused him
to cry until he became blind. Allah said to him,
' Dear Syuaib, if your deed is
caused by fear for the tortures
of hell, I have guarded you
from it. If it is caused by
longing for paradise, I allow you to enter it.'
Prophet Syuaib (a.s.) answered: 'Ilahi, my Lord,
You know that my crying is not
because of fear of Your hell
and yearning for Your
paradise. But because of the love
that is rooted in my heart. I
can no longer endure my patience
to see You.' "
Allah has proclaimed as mentioned in Shahifah Prophet Idris ('alaihissalaam):
" Fortunate be they who worship
Me because of love for Me.
They who make Me their God.
Spend their nights and days
in service for Me, breaking
away from everything other than
Me because of sincere love and
virtuous desire and
submission of whole self to Me. "
It was mentioned in the prayer of Imam Husain:
" Blind are the eyes of he who
does not think that You
are observing him,
and he who has not reaped Your Love as profit
has suffered losses in his
trade. "
