 As-Salamu-Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu

Some Muslims only observe the rituals of Islam mainly Prayer and Fasting, disregarding anything else. Others on the other hand neglect their Prayers, Fasting, etc. and dedicate a lot of time and effort doing good deeds and keeping social contacts. Islam is a complete way of life and embraces all aspects of life be it spiritual, social, economical, etc. In any aspect of life, if you are looking for answers you will find it in Islam.

Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala does want us to spend the 24 hours of the day in worship but what Allah Ta'ala really wants is that we must be conscious of Him and His Greatness. If a person goes about doing his normal activities it is acceptable to Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala as long as his activities are not things forbidden in Islam. He has to work in order to feed this family just as a mother has to do the housework in order to take care of the family. These everyday activities that we take for granted are all forms of worship as long as they are not forbidden.

The Messenger (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) as stated:

'Surely your Lord has a right over you, your eyes have a right, your wife has a right over you and your guest has a right over you, so give each their right.’  (Reported by Al-Bukhari)

One must satisfy their physical needs for rest, food and drink. Entertaining one’s self is also allowed, like playing with your children, going on family outings like picnics, relaxation as long as they are within the bounds of Islam.

Beware of spending too much time on the TV watching those hi-tech programs that arouse violence or sexual desires or both. Mankind as added a new more devious tool and that is the internet, if not used carefully can cause much chaos. Allah Almighty has stated in the Glorious Qur'an:

“Nor come near to adultery for it is an indecent and an evil way.”  (Al-Isra:32)

In this Ayat Allah Almighty is warning us not to do deeds or actions that may lead us to indecency. Everyone knows that bad habits are easy to adapted to. It is the good habits that need time and effort. Thus this time and effort leads to success both in this world and in the Hereafter.

May Allah guide us Allah to the Straight path. Ameen
